With a desire to be “one of the few and the proud,” Joseph C. Logsdon enlisted in the Marine Corps during his junior year at South Central Junior-Senior High School.
Now, Logsdon is an officer in the Marines. He was commissioned a second lieutenant during a ceremony Feb. 19 at the First State Capitol Building in Corydon.
The family had wanted to have the commissioning on the Hurley D. Conrad Memorial Bandstand, to help follow guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but the weather didn’t cooperate.
Instead, they were able to have the ceremony indoors at the capitol building with a limit of a dozen people. Among them were Logsdon’s parents, Kenneth C. and Nicole Logsdon of Elizabeth; his sister, Kaylee Logsdon, and her boyfriend, Caden Cunningham; his grandfather, Don Logsdon; and his aunts, Teresa Morris, Jennifer Soots and Ellen Logsdon.
The 22-year-old, who was born at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, participated in varsity baseball, basketball and cross-country before graduating in 2017 from South Central.
After graduation, Logsdon attended Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., and, after completing tank school at Fort Benning, Ga., became a tank operator for Echo Company 4th Tank Battalion at Fort Knox, Ky., During that time, he earned the rank of corporal.
While in the Marine Corps reserves, Logsdon attended the University of Southern Indiana and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
Logsdon said he decided to study criminal justice because he found it interesting and discovered there were many similarities between the military and law enforcement. He also joined the Marines to better himself both physically and mentally, he said.
The commissioning ceremony was conducted by Capt. Done, with SSgt. Sunday and Sgt. Collins assisting.
Logsdon’s father and grandfather participated by placing the pins on Logsdon’s uniform.
Now, Logsdon will attend combat training at “The Basic School” in Quantico, Va., and will receive classroom, field and practical application training on weapons, tactics, leadership and standard operational protocols. After that, he will receive training on his military occupational specialty, which will be his job for the upcoming years.
