Says Schultz, “When our Atlanta show was canceled, we went back to our Minnesota office ready to hit the ground running on a plan to support American makers through an online marketplace. Having a physical presence in our show cities over the past several decades has helped us build relationships with local schools, museums, collectors, and businesses, and we also wanted to continue to engage these partners through online programming. The resulting Craft Week is both a marketplace and a celebration of craft, allowing everyone to experience the joy that handmade objects and making can bring to their lives.”
The online format also opens up the venue to new communities. Of the Week’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, Schultz says the Council “recognizes and acknowledges the traumas of institutional and structural racism and exclusionary practices and is committed to working toward a more inclusive, just, and equitable world. Through Craft Week, we aim to support and amplify the work maker communities are doing to dismantle, mend, and heal in our contemporary lives. ACC hired Corey Pemberton of Crafting the Future and Morgan Walker of Make Do Market to invite new BIPOC makers to participate in Craft Week. Of the artists that will be featured in Craft Week, 30 percent are BIPOC and new to ACC.”
In addition to the virtual marketplace, San Francisco Bay Area Craft Week will also host programs including online meet-ups and workshops with the artists; studio tours; lessons on the history of the area’s crafts tradition; playlists that invite attendees to listen to makers’ favorite studio music; and an online preview party for Council members, among other initiatives.
