The biggest Christmas craft trends this year, as revealed by Hobbycraft - HouseBeautiful.com

Personalisation, sustainability and mindfulness are three key drivers shaping this year's biggest Christmas craft trends, according to Hobbycraft.

2020 has most definitely seen a resurgence in craft, with the nation rediscovering and embracing the power of making – and as was revealed in Hobbycraft's How We Got Hooked Report, 95 per cent of people were busy crafting during lockdown.

Not only did people do crafts to make the most of their free time (28 per cent), but craft activities were good for their wellbeing (56 per cent), and 42 per cent said it was also a good distraction during the pandemic.

Unsurprisingly, the nation has been embracing Christmas craft more than ever before, with Hobbycraft reporting a 30 per cent increase in sales compared to this time last year, and 'Christmas' is the retailer's most searched for term on its Ideas Hub.

'We anticipate this Christmas is going to be the biggest handmade Christmas ever. The nation embraced all things crafts-related during lockdown, and fell back in love with old past times,' says Katherine Paterson, Customer Director at Hobbycraft. 'The festive season is the perfect opportunity for people to put these new found skills to use, and create something filled with love for family and friends.'

Whether it’s personalising a bauble or adding a special handmade touch to a carefully wrapped gift, get some inspiration from Hobbycraft's Christmas trends.

Eco gift wrap

Shoppers are embracing the eco alternative to traditional gift wrap for Christmas 2020. With shoppers favouring brown kraft paper to pre-made paper with foil and glitter finishes, gift wrap is certainly having an eco-makeover. Hobbycraft reports a surge in sales in kraft wrapping paper by 100 per cent compared to last year, while searches for 'brown paper' are up 109 per cent. Plain wrapping paper is a great way to get creative, as you can add your own designs and personal touches.

Personalisation

Personalisation always makes a gift extra special, and it's no surprise that it's a big trend this year as our attention turns to more thoughtful present ideas. And according to Hobbycraft, the desire to personalise and customise has never been easier thanks to Cricut, a digital crafting tool that's fast becoming a customer favourite.

Cricut allows users to precisely cut, write and score a wide range of materials including paper, leather, balsa wood, cotton and fabric to create endless personalised projects, from cards and monogrammed garments to decorations and gifts.

Hand lettering

From brush-lettered baubles to customised Christmas Eve boxes and crackers, brush lettering and calligraphy is a great way to start personalising Christmas gifts and decorations. 'The artful loops, flicks and flourishes has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years as consumers have a go at this slow and methodical way of writing letterforms to help stimulate mindfulness and relaxation throughout the festive period,' say the team at Hobbycraft.

Website searches for 'brush lettering' has increased by 28 per cent at Hobbycraft, while calligraphy set sales are up 36 per cent.

Natural materials

Natural materials like foliage, oranges and pinecones make beautiful crafts and Hobbycraft expects more people than ever will be using these materials this Christmas. The retailer has introduced already-popular how-to guides on 'How To Make Natural Christmas Decorations' and 'How Make a Natural Festive Wall Hanging'.

Yarn crafts

Yarn crafts this Christmas are on the rise as Hobbycraft sees searches for yarn and accessories increase by 30 per cent on its website. To cater to demand, Hobbycraft has launched new projects for beginners including How to Make Punch Needle Decorations and How to Make Macrame Baubles.

The retailer launched its macrame cord in February, and has so far sold over 59,000 balls of yarn, with cream being the most popular colour, followed by mustard. Hobbycraft anticipates that this popularity will continue to rise in 2021 as the awareness of mindful crafting and its therapeutic benefits continues to grow.
