Gnome Craft Pub burglarized Sunday in St. Paul - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

A Cathedral Hill restaurateur said on social media Sunday that his restaurant was burglarized early Sunday morning, marking the fifth time one of his restaurants or offices has been broken into.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, burglars broke into the Gnome Craft Pub on Selby Avenue through the back door, setting off the alarm and taking the restaurant’s safe, according to owner Brian Ingram.

According to the police report, officers responded to an alarm at 3:19 a.m. and the cleaning staff at the restaurant told them that “everything was fine” but that they thought they had heard someone trying to open a door. Officers left and then at 5:49 a.m. the owner called police to report that the business had been burglarized and a safe had been taken from an upstairs office.

Ingram said in a Facebook video that this marks the fifth time one of his businesses has been burglarized in just a few months, and that he has heard of other area businesses and homes facing the same types of crimes. Ingram also owns Hope Breakfast Bar.

St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders said there has been an increase in commercial burglaries in the area so far this year, but he also noted there has been a dip in residential burglaries.

In the city’s Western District, where Cathedral Hill is located, there were 30 commercial burglaries last month, compared with 23 commercial burglaries in January 2020.

In January 2020, there were 66 residential burglaries in the Western District, compared with 42 in January this year.

In his posts, Ingram said he was “disgusted” by a lack of support from officials regarding the crimes at his businesses.

Mayor Melvin Carter gave the following statement Sunday night:

“The safety concerns the pandemic has brought demand action,” Carter said. “I am working closely with impacted community members and Police Department leadership alike to adjust our public safety strategies to meet this unprecedented moment.”

According to KSTP, burglars attempted to gain entry to the Gnome’s safe a few weeks ago, but couldn’t. They instead took employees’ backpacks and other belongings. Cameras caught images of the thief and his vehicle.

Ingram said cameras were able to capture the burglars on Sunday morning, as well.

Police are investigating all the burglaries.
