While craftsmanship tends to be coupled with tradition, fashion and design polymath Jonathan Anderson argues it's also the key to modernity. Since taking on the role of creative director of Spanish luxury fashion house Loewe, Anderson has encouraged the company to embrace its heritage through initiatives such as the annual Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, which revealed its 2020 finalists today. Conceived in 2016, the award pays tribute to Loewe’s mid-19th-century origins as a collective craft workshop, while honoring artists who have contributed significantly to the development of contemporary craft.

Demonstrating a shared concern for the environment, many of this year’s 30 finalists (who represent six continents and 18 countries) incorporated upcycled materials into their submitted work. For example, Iranian artist Afsaneh Modiramani created two tapestries depicting the few trees peppering Tehran’s cityscape, while Carla Garcia Durlan of Spain presented abstract jewels comprised of found fabric and wood to illustrate the aesthetic potential of waste materials. Among the more prominent prize finalists are ceramic artists Anthony “Tony” Marsh (United States), Bodil Manz (Denmark), and Jack Doherty (Ireland), as well as mixed-media artist Joël Andrianomearisoa (Madagascar).

Anthony “Tony” Marsh is based in Long Beach, California.

A panel of 10 experts, led by architecture and design correspondent Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, selected the finalists for the prize’s fourth edition. A twelve-person jury, which includes Anderson, Pritzker Prize–winning architect Wang Shu, Musée des Arts Décoratifs director Olivier Gabet, and Japanese lacquer artisan Genta Ishizuka (the 2019 Craft Prize winner), will decide the 2020 recipient of the €50,000 award.

The winning artist will be announced on May 19th during the prize’s exhibition opening at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where all of the shortlisted works will be on public view from May 21st to July 12th. The exhibition will also be presented in digital form, thanks to Google Arts & Culture, which currently hosts a virtual tour of the 2019 prize exhibition in Tokyo, as well as detailed catalogues from each of the award’s editions.

Jiyong Lee, also from the U.S., submitted a glass sculpture.
