Parma Community Craft Sale sellers hoping to attract holiday shoppers - cleveland.com

PARMA, Ohio -- Crafters by nature are a resourceful bunch, able to ingeniously transform the ordinary into something memorable and special.

That was the case last month when Parma’s first-ever citywide Community Garage Sale included numerous crafters taking advantage of the opportunity to show off their artistic wares.

The craft angle turned out to be such a success that Parma scheduled a Community Craft Sale taking place Oct. 1 through 3 in the city.

“After the garage sale I had a resident reach out asking if we could do a community craft sale,” Ward 4 Parma City Councilwoman Kristin Saban said. "I thought it was a fantastic idea.

“Especially with the pandemic, it’s always good to support our small businesses, our friends and our neighbors.”

At that point, Saban and Ward 2 Councilwoman Debbie Lime took the idea to the mayor, who was in favor of hosting another city-wide event.

“With no craft fairs due to COVID 19, these folks who make a living doing (crafts) are suffering,” Lime said. “This is a way to help these folks sell their products and allow people to buy these wonderful crafts.”

Vendor participation in the Community Craft Sale costs $5. The deadline to register is Friday (Sept. 25).

In return, homeowners will receive a garage sale permit and visible street markings for participants in the mail. For more information, email or call Karen Jones at 440-885-8094. The city plans to promote the event via email and social media posts by providing maps of sale locations to shoppers.

Lime said she was impressed regarding the social distancing and safety protocols shoppers and sellers displayed at the Community Garage Sale. She’s hoping for the same regarding the craft event.

While 150 homes participated in Parma’s Community Garage Sale, so far Saban said less than a couple of dozen crafters have signed up. However, this type of event promotes quality over quantity, especially with the holiday season right around the corner.

Just like at last month’s sale, Parma crafter Daneen Kreuzer will once again be selling her crafts out of her Ward 4 garage.

“I’m very excited,” Kreuzer said. "It brings some normalcy back to life and it will help start out the beginning of the holiday season.

“The crafters and vendors are small businesses that most forget about because we do not have a storefront, but we do spend so much money and time making special items that make for that perfect special gift.”

While not a crafter, Saban said she plans on shopping at the upcoming Community Craft Sale.

“I’ll be looking for some different ideas for the grandparents this Christmas,” Saban said.
