Three Craft Academy students named National Merit semifinalists - Morehead State University News

September 11, 2020 Three students from the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics at Morehead State have been named semifinalists in the 66th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. Approximately 16,000 nationwide are in semifinal competition.  

Students from the Academy who were named semifinalists are:  

• Matthew Edward Louis from Taylorsville, Spencer County High School.   
• Kyle Andrew Reed from Frankfort, Western Hills High School.   
• William Douglas White from Manchester.   

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the competition's finalist level. More than 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. Winners will be announced in the spring.   

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics is a dual-credit residential high school for academically exceptional Kentucky students. The Craft Academy's purpose is to meet the unique educational needs of academically gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors in the Commonwealth. The academic rigor of the Craft Academy challenges students to excel at their highest level through project-based STEM+X courses and hands-on learning experiences, with emphasis on innovation, design and creativity, and civic and regional engagement.
