Mississippi State fans were surprised earlier this week when former walk-on safety Londyn Craft was announced as a starter for the Bulldog defense. The New Mexico native has three years of Bulldog experience under his belt. After prepping at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Craft accepted an invited walk-on opportunity in Starkville.
After a redshirt year in 2017, Craft worked primarily on special teams during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The son of former CFL football standout Douglas Craft, Londyn has turned heads in fall camp. Despite having just one college tackle to his credit, Craft has earned a spot on the first team defense. This weekend, Craft and corner back Esaias Furdge will make their first college starts.
"The two guys you mentioned (Furdge and Londyn Craft), they play crazy hard. I look out there -- those guys and you see something fly around the ball," Coach Mike Leach said. "I’m amazed at how hard they play. They both have a nose for the ball, they’re always around the ball. You’re out there and you try to get something in – squeeze a post or something – yeah, they’re very disruptive. They come with serious intention and bounce all over the field. Both of them catch well enough".
The rebuilt Bulldog secondary will have a true test on their hands this Saturday when they face off against LSU. The Tiger offense put together one of the most prolific seasons in the history of college football last season on their way to a national championship. While many of the stars from that team are now playing professional football, the Tiger cupboard is far from bare.
Bulldog safeties coach, Jason Washington met with the media earlier this week to talk about his unit and the challenges that lie ahead in Baton Rouge.
