Old Sturbridge Village has posted its Historical Craft Classes for 2021 and if you have taken and enjoyed some in the past, then you better hurry if you intend to sign up for some this year.
Almost half of the classes, which are geared to adults ages 18 and older, are already sold out.
“We have been offering the classes for adults since 1980. They are an opportunity to learn new skills and to make a craft that you can take home with you,” said, Derek Heidemann, assistant director of interpretation at OSV.
“In general, our blacksmithing and metal classes sell out quickly, I think because there is such a heightened awareness of those trades in the past two years with several different television shows highlighting the traditional trades. Hearth cooking also does very well and so does woodworking. I think most people at some time in their lives have made something with wood, even if it was just a birdhouse made from Popsicle sticks. People just want to learn more about these crafts and acquire the skills to be able to do some of them on their own,” he added.
At least two of the classes were imagined for spring.
“With COVID-19 there has been a heightened interest in planting your own garden. In Forging Garden Tool, participants will make a hoe to use in their own gardens. Planning an Heirloom Garden is based on period herbs, flowers, vegetables and mixed greens you wouldn’t get information on in your typical garden store,” Heidemann said.
Summer classes still available include:
- Forging Garden Tools, May 1-2 (two-day class)
- Woodworking for Beginners, May 1
- Planning an Heirloom Garden, May 2
- Decorative Floorcloths, May 2
- Make a Shaker Oval Box, May 2
- Introduction to 19th Century Baking Techniques, May 2
- Introduction to Cheesemaking, June 26
- Intermediate Blacksmithing, July 10, 17, 24 and 31 (four-night class)
- Intermediate Blacksmithing, Aug. 14, 21, 28 and Sept. 4 (four-night class)
- Hand-cut Dovetails, Aug 21 and 28, (two-night class)
- Beginning Tinsmithing, Aug. 14-15 (two-day class)

They are also making adjustments to workspaces to meet social distancing requirements. Should they need to cancel any classes for any reason, full refunds will be provided. Visitors are expected to follow any COVID-19 related safety policies in place at the time of the class.
