TEXARKANA, Arkansas — The weekend featured barrel racing at the Four States Fair and Rodeo Arena. But in the background, young buckaroos practiced their skills in preparation for their turns in the spotlight.
Both cowboys and cowgirls twirled their ropes and took aim at a target designed to sharpen their roping skills.
The mobile steer fascimile, with a head/neck region as well as rear legs designed for roping, is sent on its way.
The cowpokes take aim in turn at the scooting target, approximating the moves they will make when doing it for real in the arena.
"I've been doing this about four years," said Dusty Beethy of Mount Ida, Arkansas. "I do poles, barrels, goats, and other stuff. I got my start in Hot Springs."
He says the exercise with the steer target is useful for sharpening his roping.
"The moves you use on this are close enough to help you out," he said. "It is all about the practice."
He plans on continuing in equestrian sports for at least 10 years. His brothers, Dakota, 14, and Dalton, 8, also do equestrian sports.
"Our family owns about seven horses and all do horsemanship as a hobby," said Dakota Beethy. "We all like to do it. Anyone at any age can take this up."
