What began in 1977 as a way to promote crafts and serve the Coral Springs community has now provided over $65,000 in scholarships for seniors from Coral Springs high schools.
Each year, the Coral Springs Craft Guild gives out at least one $500 award to a student pursuing further education in the arts. If funds permit, they give more.
“We usually give out two scholarships, but this year we were able to give out a third due to a donation in honor of a long-time member,” said Anji Scarbrough, scholarship coordinator and 27-year member of the guild.
The scholarship program is open to students living in Coral Springs or attending a Coral Springs or Parkland high school. Funding typically comes from raffles held at events throughout the year, including an annual craft show in the fall.
“Due to Covid, last year we were unable to give out a scholarship due to the limitations of collecting the artwork, as well as judging in person,” said Scarbrough. This year, for the first time, the guild was able to accept applications digitally.
The recipients of this year’s annual art scholarships were three Coral Springs Charter School seniors.
Savannah Cox won $500 for first place by designing and sewing her own costume patterns.
Kai Donaldson was awarded $300 for second place, and Alexa Yang received $250 for third place – both for their digital artwork, a first for the competition.
