Craft fair fundraiser set to help senior horses at Jackson-area sanctuary - MLive.com

JACKSON COUNTY, MI-- A Pleasant Lake horse rescue is inviting artists to participate in a craft fair later this month.

Reality’s Chance Rescue Sanctuary, 4519 E. Berry Road, is looking for a variety of artists to sell their wares at the craft fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 26. Current vendor talents include woodworkers, painters, welders, authors and more.

Wondering if you can participate? Sanctuary Founder Laura Hauenstein said any type of craft-- from wine to upcycling-- will do.

“I had the idea to do this because last year was so rough on everyone,” Hauenstein said.

She wants to help Jackson-area artists get back to selling after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as bring awareness and funds to the sanctuary’s needs.

In the last few years, the rescue, founded in 2010, has taken in many older horses, Hauenstein said.

“We sat down and just realized, holy smokes, we spend a fortune on the senior horses, because they need to eat so much grain because they can’t necessarily process the hay,” Hauenstein said. “So funds really deplete fast when you’re taking care of those senior horses.”

When elderly horses lose their teeth, they are unable to gain nutrients from chewing hay and are switched to a grain diet, Hauenstein said. A single senior horse will eat a bag of grain feed per day, she said.

An outdoor vendor table costs $20, a table inside the hay barn costs $30 and a table in the arena with internet access is $40. Tables will be spaced for social distancing, Hauenstein said.

For patrons, the craft fair will also include live music, yoga classes, a coffee stand and a food truck.

Vendors interested in the craft fair can message the sanctuary via its Facebook page or email Hauenstein at laura@realityschance.org to sign up.
