San Diego Brewers Guild to offer training to craft breweries after sexual harassment allegations - The San Diego Union-Tribune

The San Diego Brewers Guild has partnered with an employment law firm to offer training to local craft breweries after a firestorm of sexual harassment allegations on social media last month rocked the industry both locally and nationally.

The guild, a non-profit trade organization for the region’s roughly 150 independent breweries, is joining forces with Jackson Lewis to conduct the training. It targets brewery supervisors and managers under California’s workplace anti-discrimination laws.

“Jackson Lewis is a member of the San Diego Brewers Guild, so when everything came to light three weeks ago, we reached out to them and asked if we could work together to fill the gap where there were missing trainings for the breweries,” said Paige McWey Acers, executive director of the guild.

What started out as a simple question on Instagram posted by a craft brewer in Massachusetts — “What sexist comments have your experienced?” — exploded into thousands of mostly anonymous stories of disrespect, harassment and in some cases assault.

Several San Diego breweries, bars and taverns were named. The founder of Modern Times stepped down after Instagram posters called out the brewery for failing to address an allegedly toxic work environment.

The three training sessions are scheduled on June 21, June 23 and July 7. Locations haven’t been determined but are expected to be spread out geographically throughout the county.

“The main goal is to make sure that supervisors are equipped to handle any issues that come up and avoid situations getting out of hand,” said Emilia Arutunian, an attorney with Jackson Lewis. “So how to spot issues before they turn into harassment, before they turn into discrimination, how to handle them, what their duties are under the law.”

The Brewer’s Guild previously offered a sexual harassment training class for members in early 2019, with about 40 people participating. It is hoping for increased participation this year.

Larger breweries provide harassment training to employees themselves, so the guild/Jackson Lewis program mostly targets smaller breweries that may not have dedicated human resources departments.

As part of the partnership, Jackson Lewis will be hosting a sexual harassment hotline for corporate guild members. Inquiries should be emailed to SDsexualharassmenthotline@jacksonlewis.com. The law firm’s local phone number is 619-573-4900.

“Companies, if they have harassment complaints or issues that they may need assistance on, they will be able to receive a 15-minute consultation for free with Jackson Lewis, “said Arutunian. “The local craft beer industry is overdue for change, and as an industry leader, the San Diego Brewers Guild is working to be that change.”
