This time of year I love to hear the voices of the children in the neighborhood at dusk as they play and shout around their yards, perhaps cheering on someone in a game of baseball or basketball or counting down the numbers to play hide and seek. Some things, like these, have not changed through the years. The fireflies seem not to be shining as often though this year, and now we are urged to bring in our bird feeders from the yard, clean them and not to re-hang them for a few weeks. The reason given is because a mysterious illness has been killing our feathered friends as close to us as Connecticut. I am going to wait a bit before I do this and just be aware as our birds in the yard seem quite happy, abundant, and well and the butterflies do enjoy all the many flowers that are now in bloom.
We also must still be careful to avoid the coronavirus and other new variants of the virus so keep wearing a mask where needed, wash your hands, and be patient and kind.
Although restaurants and stores are now open to the public, I wish I could tell you that many public buildings are also. However, most of them in Oak Bluffs are either closed or only open for limited hours. Our public library is open for limited hours and browsing in certain areas, with a mask of course. Both the Council on Aging Building and our town hall are closed, but you may receive information or assistance by phone. All will hopefully be open soon for us to do our business more easily in person when it is deemed safe for employees and clients.
We are sending healing thoughts and prayers to Keyshawn Devine of Aquinnah who was seriously injured in a truck accident last week. Former Oak Bluffs paramedic Trulayna Rose and a longtime friend of Keyshawn’s mother, Heather Devine, has set up a Go Fund Me campaign for this family as Keyshawn faces months of treatments and his parents will be unable to continue their work during that time in order to take care of him. Please consider making a donation to this family to help them in the months ahead.
Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Eleanore Tompkins who died last week. Eleanore was devoted for many years to her church and so many people in the Good Shepherd Parish of Martha’s Vineyard have been the recipients of her assistance. She will be missed by us all.
The Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association will hold its annual Craft Sale at the Tabernacle, rain or shine, on Saturday, August 7, from 9 am to 2 pm. The crafts will include fabulous knitting, crochet, origami, pottery and more. MVCMA can be reached at 598-693-7784. For generations grandmothers and mothers have passed on their handiwork skills to their children and the annual Craft Show allows them a chance to display their talents and is your opportunity to purchase some gifts for others or perhaps yourselves.
Once again the United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard will be helping Island kids get off to a good start this school year by filling backpacks with essential “back to school” supplies such as packages of pencils, pens, erasers, notebooks, highlighters, binders, and more. These filled backpacks will be delivered to the Island schools one week before school begins. The church is asking church members as well as community members to help support this project by donating some school supplies to fill the backpacks. Please drop off the items at Phillips Hardware in Oak Bluffs, where a box will be set up to receive your gifts. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, please send a check to the United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 2580, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557 and state in the memo line: Backpack Project. Your help with this community outreach program is greatly appreciated.
Emmy awardwinning writer and host of “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” Seth Meyers will be making his debut at Oak Bluffs’ iconic Tabernacle on August 5 to raise money for underserved youth. Partnering with the DJ Henry Dream Fund, proceeds from the event will be distributed to children’s recreational programs on Martha’s Vineyard. The DJ Henry Dream Fund was founded by current Martha’s Vineyard residents Angella and Danroy Henry in an effort to create something positive through the unthinkable tragedy of their son DJ whose life was cut short in 2010. The nonprofit’s vision is to share DJ’s love of sports by providing Massachusetts community-based organizations scholarships that support children between 5 and 18 years old. The goal with this event is to raise money that stays on this Island and specifically, that will benefit Martha’s Vineyard children who need it the most. Tickets for the event start at $45. The night starts promptly at 7:30 pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. Please note that no outside food may be brought into the Tabernacle. For more information, email events@djdreamfund.org.
We send birthday smiles to Aiden and Logan Araujo on July 24, Paul Robinson on the 26th, and Travis Bernard, Rachel Barrett, and Denise Alwardt on July 29.
Enjoy your week. Peace.
