KALEVA -- While the annual Kaleva Days celebration was shelved for another year, there was still plenty for residents and visitors to do this weekend.
An arts and crafts show, the first of its kind for that area, was hosted by the Kaleva Art Gallery on Saturday.
Gallery member Tricia Boucha, an organizer for the inaugural event, said it had been a success, and intends to bring the arts and crafts show back next summer.
"We got a wonderful eclectic mix of different artisans and craftspeople and vendors," Boucha said. "The fee was low enough that I think it brought people from all different regions. Everybody seemed to be really happy with the spaces that we gave them."
Nearly 50 artists had booths at the show, said Boucha, including some like Jeri. L. Miley, a Grand Rapids painter and mosaic artist who traveled considerable distances to showcase her work in Kaleva.
The outdoor showing was a first for Miley, whose work has been showcased at locations in Metro Detroit and New York.
Jeff Sanborn, a retired woodworker and recent transplant to the Bear Lake-area said the show was a welcoming one.
"It's been nothing but positive," Sanborn said. "It's actually a pretty good showing that turned out. I just do this mainly for fun and if I make a couple of bucks, that's fine.
Boucha noted a growing number of Michigan-based artists like herself and Sanborn have moved to the area in recent years.
"I noticed that a lot of the people that are becoming members of the gallery are new transplants here," Boucha said. "I think as a general rule that the people in that age group from 40 to 60, the craftsman people are tiring of the suburbs, and the city … and I think that COVID might have contributed a little bit to that, because they want to get away from the masses and be in a cleaner, less populated area."
"… So I think that they're just bringing their talent up to a cleaner, more wholesome environment," she continued.
Some events traditionally held during Kaleva Days also made a comeback this year, including the community yard sale and car show.
Boucha said attendance at those events, as well as the arts and crafts show could help grow the Kaleva community.
"We did it the same weekend as the car show to bring more people in, which I think we really did, because there's more cars here than I've ever seen here. Last year, I think there was a third of this," she said. "I went in (the Kaleva Tavern) several times to get lunch… and they were so busy, they couldn't even take our order. So hopefully that means that some of these buildings get to be reopened again and bring a little life back into town."
