The popular show featuring artists and crafters celebrates its 40th anniversary

After having to cancel their event in 2020 due to the pandemic, the 40th annual Holly-Day Magic Art and Craft Show returns to Roswell’s Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds.
Vera Carabajal, Holly-Day Magic committee member, wrote in an email, “After a long and difficult year, we are back on.”

The show is a major fundraiser for The Assurance Home, The First Tee of Southeastern New Mexico, Royal Family Kids Camp, Christian Outreach Ministries and Roswell’s local high schools.
“The 2019 show raised over $6,000, which was used to assist these programs and organizations,” Carabajal wrote.
Artists and crafts people had to find different ways to bring their art to the public when the lockdowns happened due to the pandemic. Many went online. Others, such as Jane Nevarez and Paul Nevarez chose to move into the local artists’ co-op, The Gallery, in downtown Roswell.
Then there is the mother and daughter duo Judy Alvarez and Wandean Phipps, who turned their hobby into an art. Both live in Artesia and were chosen to be this year’s featured artists, Carabajal wrote.
Asked how she became interested creating art out of recycled objects she finds at garage sales and at Goodwill, Alvarez said in a phone interview, “I was raised in El Paso. My father did a lot of garage sales. I was taught you use what you have. We didn’t have a lot growing up, and, so, for example, my dad would go to a garage sale and buy us a puzzle. And it might be a 100-piece puzzle, but it was never complete. But I was happy that we had it.”
Alvarez said that she and her daughter use their time crafting and painting as a time to bond. Self-taught, they learned their art through trial and error.
“We started out with bows and now we paint on windows. Most of them are angels. We do a lot of Christmas, Thanksgiving pictures,” Alvarez said.
Asked what her favorite project is, Alvarez said, “The window, because it’s a challenge to find old windows to begin with. A lot of times, we would be driving by and seeing somebody turning out their windows, and we’ll stop and ask if they would sell them to us or just give them to us.”
Phipps said that she has been interested in crafts as long as she can remember.
“I like to be creative, and everything we can find (we) turn around and make it into something new or add it to something. Basically, I like to say recycling and ‘up-cycling.’ We’ve been doing it before 2009, but we started our craft shows in 2009. I believe we’ve been to every Holly-Day Magic Show since 2009,” Phipps said.
Asked what they liked about Holly-Day Magic Art and Craft Show, Phipps said that part of it is seeing the other vendors who have become friends over the years.
“We don’t see them the whole year, but we’re right back were we left off — the smiles on their faces when people pick up their stuff. And seeing our returning customers, too. They bought some stuff and they always seem to buy more. So we’re doing something right,” she said.
Phipps said that her three children are helping as well. “They also enjoy coming and making their own little things and adding it. They’ve been a big help setting up,” she said.
Asked what she would tell somebody who wants to participate in art and craft shows, Phipps said, “For somebody who is doing it as their job, it’s definitely a commitment, but for us it’s something we do for joy and something we do together.”
According to Carabajal, the show will feature a variety of handmade creations by artists, artisans and crafters from New Mexico and Texas. Most of the favorite exhibitors are returning and there will be new artists as well.
“There will be an array of unique crafts such as fine art, jewelry, pottery, glass and woodwork, women and children’s apparel, leather work, stuffed bears, sweet green chile and much more,” Carabajal wrote.
Ticket holders have a chance to win one of four prizes, including a nativity scene by Alvarez, a sunflower painting by Phipps, a gift certificate to Cattle Baron restaurants and a framed Peter Hurd print. Hourly drawings for works donated by vendors also are planned.
There also will be cakes, sweet and savory treats, and a food truck at the show.
Holly-Day Magic Art and Craft Show will take place at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds, 2500 S.E. Main St., Nov. 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children under 12 get in for free.
