Local brewery gaining popularity among craft beer scene - The Saratogian

MALTA, N.Y. — New local business Active Ingredient Brewing Company is gaining popularity among the craft beer scene for serving science by the pint.

This unique new brewery, located at 2443 Route 9 in Malta’s Sitwell Plaza, was founded earlier this year by two area pharmacists Brian Fox and Nathan Rogers.

The owners met at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, then later worked in the field together.

In addition to their shared profession, Fox and Rogers both have a passion for brewing beer.

As science types, they have always been drawn to the chemistry of craft brewing. “We’re both pharmacists, so chemistry kind of runs in the blood,” Rogers said.

What started as a homebrewing hobby more than a decade ago has evolved into the pair opening their own commercial brewpub in May.

The duo strategically chose to start their new venture in Malta because of the town’s recent growth.

“It’s really up and coming right now,” Rogers said, noting the upcoming expansion of GlobalFoundries, which is in close proximity to its site in the Luther Forest Technology Campus.

“We saw Malta an opportunity where there’s a lot of residential area, but not a lot of commercial. So not a lot of businesses catering to the residents,” Fox added.

Now,  Malta residents can enjoy Active Ingredient’s craft beer right in their hometown. “The craft brewery market is booming, and we thought Malta could use some craft beer,” Rogers said.

Active Ingredient Brewing Company produces a wide variety of beers and even some ciders.

Some of the brewery’s top sellers so far are its New England style IPAs – Control Group, Mom Genes and Skinny Genes – as well as a Kolsch Style Ale known as Freudian Sips and a sour ale called Proton Donation, which can be served with flavored syrups upon request.

Using ingredients from Saratoga Apple, Active Ingredient also makes two types of cider: a dry variety titled Newton’s Champagne and a sweeter version named Atom’s Apple.

For fall, the brewery also has an ale labeled Pumpkin Pi, which the brewers made using 100 pounds of roasted pumpkin.

Throughout the product line, and the entire brewpub, customers will notice a strong science vibe.

Aside from giving the brewery a theme to run with, Fox and Rogers feel that their knowledge science gives them a leg up as brewers when they’re working and experimenting in the “brew-lab.”

Active Ingredient beers are available in the brewery’s taproom or can be purchased in crowlers for off-site consumption. Growlers can also be filled at the brewery.

The brewery’s kitchen serves brewpub fare including pretzels and beer cheese, burgers, and Philly cheesesteaks.

The large facility, which offers indoor and outdoor seating, presents regular live music, trivia, and happy hour specials.

Looking ahead, Fox and Rogers are looking to grow Active Ingredient Brewing Company by expanding into canning, and possibly starting some distribution.
