COVID-19 threw a monkey wrench into many Florida high school seniors’ efforts to earn a Bright Futures scholarship — in many cases their best chance to afford a university education. After much behind the scenes work, the Department of Education has come up with a partial solution. Read on for that and more Florida education news.

The virus made it impossible for seniors to earn higher test scores or complete their volunteer hours. An executive order issued late Wednesday aimed to ease those obstacles. But for some teens, it still might not be enough.

The Pasco County School Board plans to resume in-person meetings next week. There could be some political drama right away.

Will students return to classrooms in the fall? Broward County school district officials consider a variety of options, including alternating days and mornings only, the Sun-Sentinel reports. • Palm Beach County officials say they’re weighing three possible plans, the Palm Beach Post reports. They’re also preparing budget cuts, just in case.

Anti-racism lessons need to come to Miami-Dade schools. So says board member Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, whose own family once lost its home because of the school district, the Miami Herald reports. More from WLRN.

Sure, they want to take a stand against racism. But the Manatee County School Board couldn’t agree on whether to use the words “black Americans” in its statement, the Bradenton Herald reports.

The Brevard County School Board is considering adoption of resolutions presented by the NAACP, Florida Today reports. • Leon County high school athletic coaches are taking on the issue with their students, the Tallahassee Democrat reports.
