How to Craft (And Use) The New Honey Blocks in Minecraft - Screen Rant

Minecraft has seen many new additions to its sandbox gameplay over the past decade, and each new inclusion helps add another layer to it's already expansive world. Mobs, short for 'Mobile', are animals and monsters that populate the endless Minecraft world, and many have been added since the game's inception. One of the more recent creatures introduced to the blocky world is the Bee.

Bees don't just sting and buzz but are instrumental for acquiring a brand new type of building block: The Honey Block. The unique block has more applications than one might expect for a sweet cube and is a worthwhile investment for any player. This guide will teach how to craft these blocks, and also explore some of their uses.

Making Honey Blocks in Minecraft

Minecraft Bee Update Cover

As one would expect, the material needed for crafting a Honey Block is Honey itself. This sweet substance is found in bee nests the randomly generate throughout their world, primarily in Plains and Forest Plains biomes. In order to procure it, players will need to right-click the nests using an easily craftable glass bottle. However, Bees guard their hives and can defeat the player with their poison if they’re not careful! To gather honey safely, simply place a campfire underneath the hive and the bees will calm down. These hives do not yield infinite honey though, as the Bees living there must supply it with pollen. There are 3 Bees per have, and the process can take a while, so procuring enough honey for several honey blocks can take a while. To expedite the honey gathering process, players can build and farm their own beehives. Just place 3 honeycombs, obtainable by shearing a bee nest (with Shears of course), in between 3 wood planks in a crafting table. Now, honey can be harvested from bees much quicker to make more and more Honey Blocks!

With enough honey, players can start to craft Honey Blocks to their heart’s content. As noted, honey is gathered using glass bottles. Once players have acquired 4 bottles worth, they can make a single Honey Block. To do so, place the 4 bottles in a crafting table to make the new block. The bottles are reused after each block is made, so players won’t have to craft new ones repeatedly.

Using Honey Blocks in Minecraft

So now that the player has made a Honey Block or several, how are they used? Like any block, they can be placed down anywhere and take up space. What makes them unique, is the sticky properties the honey gives them. When placed on the ground, entities will walk slowly across them as if they were Soul Sand from the Nether. Unlike Soul Sand, Mobs will avoid walking on a Honey Block. This property can be useful if players want to discourage other entities from walking into certain areas. However, the true utility of Honey Blocks is its use in vertical navigation. Players are capable of sliding along pillars made from Honey Blocks to safely descent to the ground. In Minecraft, players take damage if they fall from great heights. It goes without saying, but this fall damage is deadly to players. Honey Blocks can help alleviate this worry, and also allow players to cling to them. From there, they can jump off and reach locations they may not have been able to prior. Great for parkour maps!  A Honey Block can also mitigate fall damage when the player falls on it. They do not outright eliminate fall damage, but landing on a Honey Block will greatly reduce damage from the impact. Perhaps placing Honey Blocks at the bottom of a mining ravine might save a player in the case of an accidental fall. In addition to these effects, these blocks will also attract Bees to them, if players need a quick distraction or want to gather the ones in the vicinity.
