BAY CITY, MI - When you look at today’s “craft culture” focus that makes people loyal to their favorite microbrews and has them seeking out artisanal foods, it’s not a surprise that some are looking for that same thing in the beverages they drink.
It’s a trend the makers of ShineWater are seeing - and one that’s allowed them to boost their business in Michigan. One of the newest vitamin-enriched hydration beverages in the country got its start in Charleston, South Carolina, but is now based in Bay City.
Last fall, early investors Rod Hildebrant and Matthew Meehan of Bay City took ownership of ShineWater and brought it into the Davidson Building in their hometown. Since then, it has increased distribution in Michigan as well as other parts of the country.
It’s marketed as a healthier alternative to those sugary sports drinks on the market. ShineWater features natural ingredients, added Vitamin D and zero sugar.
That makes it a good fit for an era in which people are more aware of what they’re putting into their bodies, said Jacob Burt, brand marketing specialist for ShineWater.
“Whether it’s where we’re eating our food, where we’re drinking our beer or what we’re buying at the grocery store, we want products that have been made with people in mind,” Burt said in a recent Michigan’s Best Podcast.
“People are starting to look at labels. They’re starting to understand brand stories ... And that same extension goes into (what) we’re eating and drinking.”
Currently, there are four ShineWater flavors available: Strawberry Lemon, Poma-Grape, Kiwi Cucumber and Peach Mango. It uses Stevia as a sweetener.
Plans are in place for swift geographic expansion. The company has quadrupled in size in the last year, and is on track to exceed $2 million in revenue within the first year under new ownership, its leaders say.
But the hydration market is competitive. The ShineWater team says it is banking on the quality of its product, and its understanding of the consumer.
“At the core, this fluid has what people really need on a day-to-day basis,” Burt said, “and it will help us stand out amongst the flavored waters, the sugar-enriched sports beverages, those things that are kind of serving a need, but not taking it to where the consumer is sitting right now.
“ShineWater takes all those things, but puts it with a great flavor.”
It is also a mission-driven company. A portion of all sales are donated to OneWorld Health to help treat nutrient deficiencies for families in East Africa and South America.
