Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition - How to Craft Gems - Screen Rant

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is the latest release in Monolith Soft's long-running science fiction series, and like many of the other JRPGs coming out this year, it's a big one. While it was first released a decade ago on the Nintendo Wii, the Nintendo Switch has become a paradise for ports, and this remaster is many players' first glimpse into the world of the Bionis and the Mechonis (even if the stand-alone sequel, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, was a surprise hit back in 2017). Shulk might be fine after a hundred-foot fall into a tiny lake, but for new players just getting their feet wet, it can be a lot to take in.

There are several different systems that are a part of the leveling progression for the characters of Xenoblade Chronicles, in addition to a huge selection of armor (and a great new tweak that lets players change their armor's appearance without sacrificing stats). On top of all that, there are also Gems, which further refine the game-play customization. This guide will explain what gems are and how to craft them.

What Are Gems in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition Menu

Essentially, gems are accessories that can be attached to certain pieces of equipment in order to boost a specific stat for that character. In the Change Equipment Menu, there is a column for Gems right next to the column for Equipment. Not all pieces of equipment can have Gems attached to them, but if they can, they should. Gems can provide stat boosts like HP or Strength Up, poison resistances (or the chance to land poison attacks), and many more. Some pieces of equipment will have lower base stats but more Gem slots, so it's always worth looking closely at the numbers and deciding what play-style to go for.

Gems can be obtained throughout the world of Xenoblade Chronicles. They are often rewards for completing quests and filling in sections of the Collectopedia. Many of the NPCs roaming around also have Gems that they might be willing to trade. As more characters join the party, it really helps to have a stockpile of Gems to equip, so look out for opportunities to get them when possible.

Crafting Gems in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition gem Crafting

Not too long into the game, the player will meet the Gem Man. Once the Gem Man has fixed his Gem Forge, Gems can be crafted using Ether Crystals and Cylinders. Here is where the system starts to get a bit complicated, but it's worth noting there's no functional difference between Crystals and Cylinders. Crystals and Cylinders can be gotten as drops from enemies or by mining the piles of glowing Ether Crystals spread throughout the world. Crystals and Cylinders alike are the materials you will select in order to craft a Gem.

Choosing Crystals & Cylinders

When the player is crafting at the Gem Forge, they can choose up to eight Crystals or Cylinders to put into the Forge. Crystals and Cylinders have different qualities, and so the player will want to pick Crystals and Cylinders that have matching qualities. If enough Crystals and Cylinders with matching qualities are selected so that the chance of making a Gem exceeds 100%, then a Gem can be made. As the player navigates the menu and selects Crystals and Cylinders, they will be able to see what quality they can potentially put into a Gem, and what percentage chance they have of making that Gem. The player will need to select enough for the meter to at least hit 100% in order to get a Gem. If the strength is less than 100%, then they'll just make another Cylinder.

For example, if the player has a number of Crystals and Cylinders that offer the potential for the HP Up quality, they should select enough of the Crystals and Cylinders so that the strength of that quality exceeds 100%. If the strength exceeds 200% (achieving "Heat" status) then they will receive an even stronger Gem. If the strength of the quality exceeds 300% (achieving "Mega Heat" status) then they will receive two of those high-quality Gems. Crystals and Cylinders can have multiple qualities, so make the most of what you match and try to get multiple Gems in a single session whenever possible.

Choosing Characters

Another factor that contributes to Gem creation is which characters are chosen to participate in the crafting. Because this game is not lacking in detail, two characters will have to be selected to operate the actual forge; one acts as the Shooter, and the other is the Engineer. Once the player picks which characters will do the crafting and selects their Crystals and Cylinders, they can then watch the actual crafting happen. A brief animation will ensue as the Shooter slaps the forge while the engineer fiddles with some knobs...

The important part of picking characters is picking two that have a high Affinity. The higher the Affinity, the longer they will go at the forge. This gives the player a better chance for the crafting to go well and for the desired quality's strength percentage to be reached. Each character has special attributes that they can bring to crafting, but the most important factor in the early stages of the game is Affinity.

It's a rather involved process but the game does do a decent job highlighting the most important numbers to look at, and there is an assist slider that can be turned on to see what is recommended. There's an element of RNG to crafting, so it never hurts to save before giving it a go. Eventually, the player will unlock a portable forge, but until then, be sure to pay the Gem Man a visit often and keep on crafting on.
