Peace out with this white dove garland craft - The Gazette: Eastern Iowa Breaking News and Headlines

A white dove has been a symbol of peace for centuries.

In the 1960s, the dove was a symbol the original hippies used to call for an end to the war in Vietnam. The poster for Woodstock — the 1969 music festival that featured 60s legends like Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Jefferson Airplane — even featured a white dove resting on the neck of a guitar.

Looking to set the mood in a peaceful, chill space? Try hanging up this dove garland, adapted from the Inner Child Fun blog.

What you’ll need:

Coffee filters

Pencil

String

Tape

Scissors

1. To start, make a dove outline using a spare piece of paper or just draw one on some newspaper. The paper should be about the size of half of a coffee filter.

2. Fold three or four coffee filters in half, and use a pencil to trace the dove outline onto the top filter.

3. Carefully cut along the outline.

4. Cut a long piece of string and get a piece of tape. Open up the “wings” of one coffee filter, and use the tape to secure the string in between the wings.

5. Attach the rest of your doves to the string in the same way, then hang them up.
