A+ Teacher: Dedicated to his craft and his community - Bay News 9

GIBSONTON, Fla. — For many kids, math is not easy.

East Bay High School math teacher Timothy Mays is finding unique ways to teach his students.

What You Need To Know

This week’s A+ Teacher, Mays is even being recognized nationally for his decades of giving back to the community.

On any given day at East Bay High, Mays can be found using props, models and all kinds of creative ways to get students excited about math.

"You've just got to be open to change and to be able to be flexible,” Mays said.

Being flexible is something Mays knows well.

He has shown love and commitment to this high school community for nearly three decades.

Mays has worked at East Bay for 27 years and even attended the school before that. And his own kids graduated from East Bay as well.

"I've even had students now this year that I had their parents in school," he said. “So, I think the longevity of seeing the whole community of East Bay, parents, children, just everything. It's always a pleasure to meet the past."

But it's his present that caught the attention of Congressman Vern Buchannan.

Mays is one of just seven Bay area educators honored with the "Congressional Teacher Award.”

"When I walk into his room and I see his data, hear his standards for the kids, his expectations,” said East Bay Principal Amy Stevens-Cox. “I want you on Kahn academy, do this lesson tonight, and the kids are in line. I’m seeing kids want to be better, and that's what makes him a Congressional Teacher Award winner."

He's not only inspiring students, as mays is instructing and encouraging fellow teachers.

"Math as a whole is kind of still the same concept as when I started teaching 27-years ago, but it's just reaching kids in different ways is a lot more important than 27-years ago,” Mays said. “We really didn't think much about the different styles and trying to get different strategies in teaching. So education has grown quite a bit."
