LOGAN SQUARE — Mercaditos, a market brimming with colorful handmade crafts made by Latino moms, is returning to Logan Square this weekend.
The craft fair is taking over the Paseo Prairie Garden at 2612 N. Kedzie Bouelvard 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Sunday. Now in its fifth year, the event will feature somewhere between 15-20 artisans selling everything from jewelry and candles to cookies and piñatas, all handmade. Shoppers and vendors will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing.
Sunday’s market is the first of the season. Founder Araceli Carrillo is planning to host a market in Logan Square or Avondale at least once a month through the warm months starting in May.

Carrillo, a longtime resident of Logan Square, launched the markets nearly five years ago after realizing the neighborhood didn’t have a regular craft fair dedicated to Mexican crafts and treats. It has since evolved to include vendors from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Chile and other Latin countries.
The markets have taken on a new meaning during the coronavirus pandemic, Carrillo said. She said many of the women have been “desperate” to sell their wares with so many other markets canceled over the past year. The last Mercaditos was held in October 2020.
“Most of them are single moms who are trying to make money. This is one of the big opportunities for them,” Carrillo said.
