MANISTEE — With an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the region, the Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital Auxiliary has canceled its 2021 Sleighbell Craft Show.
This is the second year that the auxiliary has canceled the craft show due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The craft show, held during Manistee’s Sleighbell Parade and Old Christmas Weekend in early December, has been the auxiliary’s largest fundraiser for more than two decades.
“We had dearly hoped to be able to resume the Sleighbell Craft Show this year, but with the recent uptick in cases and hospitalizations, we feel the risk to our volunteers, vendors, and patrons is too high,” Kathy Berish, a longtime hospital volunteer and one of the event organizers said in a news release.
Berish noted the host location is not permitting outside groups to use the facility at this time to safeguard the health of its staff and students.
“While there’s a chance the situation could improve by December, a craft show of this size takes months of planning, for our team and for our vendors, so we needed to make a determination as early as possible,” she said.
The auxiliary is notifying its past vendors by mail.
In addition to providing assistance to patients and staff within the hospital, the Manistee Hospital Auxiliary hosts several fundraisers to benefit local services.
“The Sleighbell Craft Show alone raises $15,000 or more each year, all of which goes right back into the hospital to support vital programs and equipment purchases,” Berish said. “We know the cancellation of gatherings has been very hard on our vendors, too. This was not an easy decision, but as a group that’s been dedicated to enhancing the health of the community for decades, we feel it is the right one.”
The auxiliary is grateful for the work being done by the healthcare heroes across the Munson Healthcare system.
“The staff in the hospitals and clinics have been working so hard over the last year and a half taking care of our community and addressing the challenges of COVID-19. We hope that with ongoing vaccination and other mitigation efforts, we can soon get back to regular operations,” Berish said.
