Judging from the crowd enjoying the beer, bands, food and the arts at Dreshar Stadium, the first Tarentum Borough craft beer festival was a success.
The festival, benefiting Tarentum Fire-Rescue-EMS was scheduled to run from 3 to 10 p.m. As of 7 p.m., an estimated 300 to 400 people had come through the gates.
“The crowd is perfect. There haven’t been any incidents. Everybody’s very excited to be out and doing this,” said event organizer and borough Councilman Brian Snyder.
A $20 admission allowed patrons to sample a variety of regionally brewed beers and other spirits — including vodka made by Boyd & Blair Distillery and Country Hammer Moonshine — and enjoy live music from six bands, including Chai Baba, which rocked a cover of the The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.”
Patrons also could bring beer and liquor home, including products from five breweries. Among them were “Just Brownin’ Araun” and “Tree Top Sunrise” brown and blonde ales from Arboretum Trail Brewing. The latter beer is a tribute to military veterans from co-owner Dan Schultz, a 33-year member of the Air Force.
“My cousins grew up around here in Tarentum, and I always liked how pretty this park is,” Schultz said. “It’s a nice venue. And it’s nice to come back to places I’ve been before and be able to serve our product. It seems like everybody’s enjoying it. And it’s nice to see other breweries down here.”
The other breweries were Old Thunder Brewing, Allusion Brewing, Dancing Gnome and Voodoo Brewing. However, some patrons said they were disappointed only five breweries set up shop.
“They could’ve used a few more breweries,” said Kevin McAtee, 60, of Saxonburg. “But for a first-year event, it’s pretty good.”
All of the art exhibits were curated by the Manos Gallery, on nearby Fifth Avenue.
For his part, Snyder said he was happy with the way the event turned out.
“This could be something we could do every year,” he said. “People are having fun. I’m glad they came out. It’s nice to see the support from the community — and even from beyond the community.
“People are coming from all over the place, and that’s what we were hoping to achieve with this. We want people to come in and see Tarentum and realize how lovely it is.
“If some people from out of town leave here and think Tarentum’s a great place, then we were successful.”
