Albany-based craft coffee startup launches - The Saratogian

ALBANY, N.Y. — Motor Oil Coffee, a craft coffee startup based in Albany, has officially launched for sales in-person and online, featuring four blends of coffee available in both whole bean and ground variations.

Co-founded by Rich Fazio and Joe Bonilla, the story of Motor Oil Coffee starts a few years ago when one of its co-founders co-owned a coffee shop in upstate New York. Learning the business of coffee retail, they took that knowledge — on top of their experience in launching and working with brands during their day jobs at a creative strategy firm — as the basis for starting Motor Oil Coffee.

The name originated through one of the co-founders visiting classic car shows and auctions across the U.S. from Pebble Beach to Kissimmee — and no matter if a car sold for $1 million or $1,500, the people setting up these shows would say the same thing: “This coffee tastes like motor oil and I love it.”

With that simple phrase, Fazio and Bonilla found that with the love of automobiles and auto-art, a desire for a powerful, yet rich cup of coffee was born.

“We’ve worked to launch dynamic retail brands during our ‘day jobs’ in creative strategy, it was only a matter of time that we would get into this ourselves,” Bonilla said in a press release. “We wanted to make sure our coffee not only tastes good but feels good while you’re drinking it. So many times, coffee can leave a long aftertaste or the ‘shakes,’ and we wanted to make sure our coffee hit the sparks, no matter if you had our decaf or our Guatemalan. And my belief is we’ve achieved that with Motor Oil Coffee.”

Fazio added, “As a father of three young children, I often found myself running on empty, and the coffee products I was using just wasn’t cutting it. So when the opportunity arose to create this brand with Joe, I jumped on it and Motor Oil Coffee was born. “I wanted to create a set of blends that tasted great but also was strong enough to get me moving and now my kids have to keep up with me.”

Motor Oil Coffee’s four blends are High Octane Premier Guatemalan, Motor Oil Standard, Daystarter, and Zero Emission.

The High Octane Premier Guatemalan blend is meant to start anybody’s engine. Made with certified organic fair trade Guatemalan beans, this dark roast leaves a velvety mouthfeel, honey-like sweetness, and citrus acidity that creates a mix of power and taste.

Ther Motor Oil Standard harvest medium blend, Motor Oil Coffee’s signature, is meant to infuse the strength, power, and drive to keep coffee drinkers moving throughout the day and night. A certified organic fair-trade blend of Sumatran, Guatemalan, and Ethiopian coffee beans creates a fruity flavor with hints of blueberry, very smooth and almost tea-like in the body.

Daystarter, the lightest, is a breakfast blend. A blend of Brazilian, Colombian and Honduran beans with notes of chocolate, citrus, and caramel create a fruit flavor with low acidity.

Zero Emission, another certified organic fair trade product, is Motor Oil’s decaf option.

Each blend is sold in one-pound bags, with both whole bean and ground variations available.

Daystarter is available at $13.99 MSRP, with High Octane Premier, Zero Emission, and Motor Oil Standard available at $15.99 MSRP.

Motor Oil Coffee products can be found at motoroilcoffee.com, participating car shows, farmers markets, and Amazon.com.
