During the mid-to-late 2000’s, Bucks fans would latch on to any sort of hope that came their way. An exciting time came when Joe Alexander was drafted by the Bucks with the 8th overall pick in the 2008 Draft. Coming into the draft, Alexander was described as the best athlete in the field. However, the answer would soon be learned — no, Alexander would not be the superstar the Bucks were desperate for.
In the Summer League, Alexander averaged 9.2 points, 3.6 boards, and 1.2 blocks per game. There wouldn’t be too many high-points during Alexander’s rookie season. His highest point total came against the New Jersey Nets in a March win where he tallied 16 points.
From that point on, there was nothing that was glamorous about the Bucks’ time with Alexander. Prior to the 2009-10 season, Richard Jefferson was dealt away to the San Antonio Spurs. On paper, this seemed to provide a path for Alexander to craft a nice opportunity with the Bucks. However, that would never come to fruition. On October 30th of 2009, the Bucks declined Alexander’s rookie contract option.
So, what was the ultimate highlight of Alexander’s time with the Bucks? I’m going with this:
Alexander was then traded to the Chicago Bulls with Hakim Warrick for John Salmons. He then signed with the New Orleans Hornets in September of 2010, but was waived shortly after. He then returned to the D-League where he spent a season with the Texas Legends. He latched on to an Atlanta Hawks minicamp prior to the lockout.
After a brief stint with the Russian team Krasnye Krylia, Alexander returned to the NBA where he signed with the Golden State Warriors in 2013. Unfortunately for him, he was waived by the team following an MRI that his leg wasn’t fully healed from injury.
Alexander’s next move was to Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he won the 2015 Israeli State Cup, as well as reaching the EuroLeague Quarterfinals. The following year, he signed a one-year deal with Dinamo Sassari, where he averaged 12 points, 4.4 rebounds, and one assist per game.
He then would return back to Maccabi for the 2016-17 season. That year, he won another Israeli State Cup with the team. He then headed to Hapoel Holon — a team where he exhibited some of his best basketball of his career. In one game, he’d score a career-high 34 points. He won Israeli Player of the Month for November, and then named Israeli League Round 28 MVP. His strong season earned him a spot in the All-Israeli League First Team.
Alexander then began a shuffle of teams, where he went to Besiktas to ESSM Le Portel of the French League. He’d then return to Hapoel Holon, and then landed with Ironi Nahariya. However, for this upcoming season, he’s back with Hapoel Holon.
