Meet the brewers and drink their beers: New York Craft Brewers Fest on tap at Landmark Theatre - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — Sometimes you want more than just to drink a beer. You want to know how it was made, who brewed it and what its back story is.

That’s what you’ll find Saturday when the New York State Craft Brewers Festival makes its seventh stop in Syracuse. The fest is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Landmark Theatre.

It features more than 55 breweries from across the state pouring a wide variety of beers, from pilsners to porters, sours to saisons, and no doubt a lot of hazy IPAs. Tickets include admission and unlimited beer samples. There’s also food available for purchase from local vendors. (See details below)

It’s presented by the New York State Craft Brewers Association, which explains why so many brewery owners and/or brewers will be on hand.

“This is really one of our favorite events,” said Paul Leone, the brewers association’s executive director. “It’s a great way to support New York state beer, and at the same time support Syracuse, the Landmark Theatre and Armory Square.”

The brewers association sponsors similar brewer-led fests across the state, but Leone has a special fondness for the Syracuse event because it was the first. That was largely through the effort of David Katleski, former owner of Syracuse’s Empire Brewing Co. and the founder of the brewers association.

The Syracuse festival also continues a tradition of being one of the bookend events for CNY Beer Week. This year, CNY Beer Week started Sunday Nov. 14 with events every day through Saturday. The brewers fest is the final event of the week — unless you count the official after-party at The Hops Spot at 116 Walton St. in Syracuse. That starts at 8 p.m.

Another special feature of this year’s fest is the chance to say farewell to Shmaltz Brewing, a legendary New York brewery that combined beer, including the He’brew line, with a generous helping of what founder Jeremy Cowan called “shtick.” Cowan is closing down Shmaltz and is making the Syracuse fest part of his farewell tour, with a special beer appropriately called Exodus 2021.

Craft breweries, like many other businesses, struggled during the Covid pandemic, which also led to the cancellation of last year’s Syracuse brewers fest.

But Leone hopes the return of the event this year marks a milepost in the continuing growth of the state’s craft beer industry.

“We’re now at about 490 breweries (in New York), so we’re very close to reaching a very big, very significant number,” Leone said. “This is the chance to come out and try your favorites and discover some of the new breweries you haven’t discovered yet.”
