Edward Tuttle, the Architect Who Helped Craft Blueprint for Aman Hotels, Has Died - Architectural Digest

Edward Tuttle, cofounder of Paris-based studio Design Realization, has died. In his AD100 profile in 2010, he said of his practice, “It’s about making the individual feel comfortable and stimulated in a space that functions well.”

Tuttle was born in Seattle in 1945. Early in his career, he worked for Gump’s in San Francisco, as well as for interior designers in Hong Kong and Greece. Although he settled in Paris, cofounding Design Realization with Christian Monges in 1977, Tuttle rarely stayed put. According to authors Massimo Listri and Daniel Rey, Tuttle was dubbed the “Livingstone of modern times” after the Scottish explorer David Livingstone, as he traveled constantly to oversee a global portfolio of residences and hospitality projects. The architect responded to this diversity of sites sensitively. As Architectural Digest wrote in 2010, “Respect for both the cultural context of the location and the potential impact of the structures on the surrounding environment is fundamental to his approach.”

Tuttle’s point of view first grabbed wide attention in 1988, with the opening of the Amanpuri boutique villa resort in Phuket, Thailand. On the hotel’s 30th anniversary, AD called the project’s deference to the landscape and incomparable guest service “groundbreaking.” A 2020 Wallpaper feature, describing Tuttle’s accomplishments in detail, noted that Amanpuri was not only “the blueprint for every Aman resort that followed,” but also that “to this day, one sees the iterations of the larger Aman imprimatur in terms of design, service, and hospitality levels in luxury resorts everywhere.” Tuttle worked regularly for Aman Resorts through the 2010s, taking part in projects on four continents. As of press time, a representative of the Singapore-based company had not yet responded to AD PRO’s request for comment.

Tuttle kept a consistently low profile. He was not quoted in either recent article on Amanpuri, nor does Design Realization have a website. His lifelong discretion may have served him well, as his design of the main house on billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s 70-acre Little St. James garnered only minimal notice. It also did not prevent him from having a prodigious output, which included multiple residences and commissions for other hotel brands such as Park Hyatt. Additionally, Tuttle was known to create products and furniture, including textiles for Jim Thompson and a Chesterfield-inspired line of seating for Wittmann.
