GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- One word: Charcuterie.
And plenty of it.
Swartz Creek couple Josh and Laina Blair wanted to turn their perfect date night into a restaurant and bar reality for couples across Genesee County.
Traveling across the state to sample the newest craft beers and wines has been a pastime for the couple for more than 15 years. The two wanted to create an experience using that knowledge, and of course, offer some fine, well-presented small plates and charcuterie boards.
“Basically, the idea for this was building our ideal date night. I like the wine, and he likes the craft beer,” said Laina Blair, co-owner.
“There’s not really much around here like this at all,” her husband and co-owner Josh replied.
Barley and Vine is located at 1072 Elms Road in Clayton Township, between Swartz Creek and Flushing.
It features a vast craft beer, cider and wine menu. There are 12 continually rotating craft beer taps, filled with local Michigan beers, as well as 60 other beers available in cans and bottles. There are also more than 55 wines available on the menu. Numerous loose-leaf teas are also available.
Starting on Wednesday, July 22, howler and growler fill-ups will be available.
Craft beer and wine flights are available and can also include pairings with cheeses. The charcuterie boards reflect international favorites.
“We offer a lot of small plates, caviar and our baked brie, which has been widely popular. Oh, and a pub-style pretzel,” Josh Blair said. “One thing people love to do is a build your own board. We hand out a check sheet, and you can choose between all of your own meats and cheeses.”
Originally slated to open in March, Barley and Vine had to push back inspections and a grand opening until the state government said businesses could reopen amidst COVID-19. While delayed, Josh Blair said he was excited to finally open the doors in June 2020.
The Blairs are advocates of shopping local and have incorporated that same mentality into building this location.
The charcuterie boards were made by Primm n Proper Pickens in Swartz Creek, and a large wooden centerpiece table was built by Flushing’s Lumber2Love.
Available snack foods Pop Daddy Popcorn and Dave’s Sweet Tooth Toffee are both Michigan made.
Three of the tables include gaming systems ready to play with Sega Genesis, Nintendo and Atari. Board games, such as Scrabble, Uno, Jenga, checkers and more are also available.
On Friday, July 24, Barley and Vine will host a Detroit Tigers opening game celebration, which will include Michigan-themed baseball beers from Mitten Brewing Company: Triple Crown Brown, Peanuts and Cracker Jack, Bean Ball Blonde. The game will air on all of the TVs, and audio throughout the bar’s speakers, while also offering discounts and giveaways throughout the game.
On Saturday evening, Devyn Mitchell will perform an acoustic set.
Barley and Vine is open seven days a week. Current weekday hours are from 4 p.m. to midnight on Wednesday through Friday and noon to midnight on Saturday.
Starting Sunday, July 26, the business hours are noon to 7 p.m. on Sundays and noon to midnight Monday through Saturday.
