One of Hendersonville’s newest businesses is hoping to attract area crafters with one-of-a-kind acrylic pours, pegboards, quote boards, self-guided canvases and more.
Pinspiration, a Pinterest-inspired craft studio “where community meets creativity,” opened in May at 1050 Glenbrook Way. The store, with its signature vintage bike and pink balloons, is the first of its kind in Tennessee, though it will soon to be joined by a second location in Chattanooga, officials said during a recent visit.
The drop-in arts-and-crafts studio cultivates creativity and community with more than 50 projects to choose from, rotating periodically and seasonally, offering a range of difficulty levels, time allotment and endless room for as much or as little creativity as the artist can muster.
It also features a Jackson-Pollock-inspired “Splatter Room,” billed as a unique, messy way to experience Pinspiration, complete with music and glow-in-the-dark features. Guests can book the “Splatter Room” for anything from kids parties to date nights.
Pinspiration caters to children and adults, men and women, individuals and groups. It can accommodate walk-ins or appointments. Artists can book ahead of time for team-building exercises or other events if they so choose.
Pinspiration also offers snacks — including charcuterie boards, hummus plates and DIY s'mores — and drinks — iced tea, coffee, lemonade and soda, to name a few — and allows adult crafters to bring their own beer or wine.
Employees, dubbed “muses” in the studio, linger to lend a hand as people work in-house, though artists are given written instructions to help guide them through a project.
All muses and customers must wear masks in the studio, and those who are concerned about social distancing can spread out using the party room.
Owner and Operator Windi Klemme said part of the fun of Pinspiration is the experience, but she noted the studio is taking proper precautions as the COVID-19 pandemic continues and there are options for those who might not want to be around others. For example, Pinspiration Hendersonville might soon offer take-home kits again for select projects, she said.
“I know there are a lot of people who are not ready to get out still, people who are immune-compromised or just fearful of the current situation,” Klemme said. “But there are a lot of people who have been shut up, and they really just want to be out and be with people.”
How Pinspiration came to Hendersonville
Klemme opened the new Hendersonville studio after she was inspired by a family vacation to Panama City Beach in July 2019.
As she scrolled through her phone to find things to do in case it rained, Klemme stumbled upon the location there. Klemme initially planned a visit as a girls day, but then her husband Whit suggested the whole family — including all five of the couple's children — check it out.
Klemme noted that even her 14-year-old son, uninterested in crafting, enjoyed the experience, though she admitted she told him she’d take away his Playstation 4 for a month if he didn't go along. The family crafted in the studio for about three and a half hours, and although Klemme didn’t make anything herself that day, she was hooked.
Klemme and her husband, who have called Hendersonville home for more than 10 years, are no strangers to running a small business. The duo also operates Wipeout Pest Control, which they describe as a 'true mom and pop" business.
The Hendersonville studio has been in the works since August 2019, Klemme explained.
Hendersonville's is one of seven studios to open nationwide during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to a news release from Pinspiration. There are now 14 studios open in the U.S.
On Wednesday, the Hendersonville studio celebrating its two-month birthday. The business was originally set to open in early April but plans were postponed to May as Klemme worked to comply with all of the orders handed down in response to COVID-19.
The pandemic couldn't derail her from her dreams, though.
“What could any of us do about it?” she said. “Do we walk away? No. Because the plan was for a family business... We really had the vision for people coming in here, families coming in here, kids having their parties, and just enjoying this ... another layer to the arts community because we really feel like the arts scene here in Hendersonville is thriving.
“My husband and I are people of faith, we’re not people of fear,” she added. “So, he just said, ‘we’re just going to do what we need to do and keep going at it.’...We know that God had a plan for this because we really feel like it was Him who told us to do this, to step out in faith.”
Pinspiration is open for walk-in crafters and to those looking to book online, Klemme said. The business can make necessary accommodations, including if customers have a guitar or a canvas of their own that they’re interested in personalizing in the “Splatter Room.”
“We have examples of everything, but you could vary on any of it,” Klemme said. “What you enjoy, your colors, your creativity... just the ability to create things that are a reflection of you.”
