More than 1,200 viewers attended Wi-Fi NOW’s Virtual Special Event on 6 GHz Wi-F for India last week. There is no question that interest in 6 GHz Wi-Fi is booming not just in India but right across the globe. You can still view the entire special event as video-on-demand here.
The event featured regulatory and Wi-Fi technology leaders from India, the US, and the UK including representatives from India’s Department of Telecommunications, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India, as well as from our evnet partners Broadband India Forum and ITU-APT. The Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDS) also spoke. The event was supported and endorsed by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
Presentations covered the technology, regulatory challenges and opportunities, as well as deep socio-economic impact that delicensing the 6 GHz band would have on India as a nation. Several speakers suggested that 6 GHz has a very important role to play in connecting India’s unconnected as well as for providing the right Internet connectivity capacity in very densely populated Indian cities.
“We believe 6 GHz Wi-Fi – everywhere but in India especially – holds transformative power, meaning making this band available to Wi-Fi will hugely benefit practically every segment of the economy, including businesses, consumers, disadvantaged communities, service providers, everyone. We believe that India has already acknowledged this as a fact. We look forward to following the India 6 GHz delicensing process in detail – and will of course be supporting this in every way,” says Claus Hetting, Wi-Fi NOW CEO & Chairman and host of last week’s event.
One of the most important tasks in the regulatory proces going forward is to study the co-existence of indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi with incumbent users of the band, such as satellite stations. Such detailed research exist for the US and the United Kingdom – who have both already delicensed the 6 GHz band – but will be required for India as well.
The Wi-Fi NOW organisation would like to thank ITU-APT, Broadband India Forum (BIF), the Wi-Fi Alliance as well as our sponsors Intel, Broadcom, Facebook, Cisco, and Qualcomm.
