The 1996 film The Craft is the perfect blend of horror, camp, and a high school story. With news that the movie is getting a reboot/sequel called The Craft: Legacy, fans are equal parts skeptical and interested.
The ladies of The Craft are different from the young witches in The Worst Witch, sweet Cassie Nightingale on Hallmark's Good Witch series, and the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus. Sarah Bailey and her three friends are tough, spirited, and in a lot of pain. It makes sense that Hollywood would want to bring this scary back, but is it a good idea?
10 Excited: The Creative Team Behind It
Blumhouse has produced many great horror movies, so fans are excited that they're working on The Craft: Legacy. Zoe Lister-Jones wrote and directed the film, and fans of Life In Pieces will remember her as the hilarious and sometimes mean Jen Short.
Fans are excited for this new Craft movie, as the creative team behind it is awesome. That's definitely important, as fans can be comforted that the film is in the right hands.
9 Unnecessary: It Can't Beat The 90's Vibe Of The Original
The original film had lots of 90's vibes, as it came out in 1996. Once the witches have their fourth and are fully in their power, they start dressing better and all of their dreams start coming true. They have a new energy about them that wasn't there before, and everyone starts noticing.
From the school uniforms to the dialogue ("we are the weirdos, mister"), The Craft is a time capsule of this time in pop culture history. No matter how good the new movie is, it will never be a 90's movie, and that's definitely too bad.
8 Excited: It's Coming Out In October 2020
Horror fans who want to start binge-watching spooky stories before Halloween can rejoice, as The Craft reboot will be on VOD in late October 2020.
This is one reason to get excited, as it's a great release date, and even those who aren't sure about a new film will admit that it's the best time of year to watch a scary story like this one. It could even become a new Halloween tradition to watch both the original movie and the new one around October 31st.
7 Unnecessary: The Four Characters Were Perfectly Cast
On the other hand, a reboot of The Craft feels unnecessary because the four original characters were cast so well.
Robin Tunney played Sarah Bailey, the new girl in town who had gotten really depressed after her mother's death in childbirth. Although she was doing much better, she was still struggling, and she quickly met the three witches at school: Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Rochelle (Rachel True), and Bonnie (Neve Campbell). They want her to be their fourth, and soon they form a coven. It's hard to imagine any other actors playing such great movie witches.
6 Excited: There Are Callbacks
The Craft: Legacy is going to have some callbacks to the 1996 film. According to Entertainment Weekly, the girls will look at Nancy's picture and they will also say "we are the weirdos, mister," which is the most famous piece of dialogue from the movie. The new girls will also play the "Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board" game like Sarah and her new friends did.
Hearing about these callbacks might make some skeptical fans more excited for the new film, as it will be fun and nostalgic to see.
5 Unnecessary: The Movie Was Already Progressive
There are many monster movies that are perfect for reboots, but The Craft doesn't need one because the movie was already progressive.
It's an incredibly feminist story, as these teenage girls find power within themselves to change their lives. They don't rely on boyfriends or even crushes, and they know that they can get what they want. This is amazing to watch, especially since these characters are considered "losers" at the beginning of the story.
4 Excited: It Doesn't Ignore The OG Story
Fans would love to see many favorite films rebooted, and while The Craft might never have been on that list, it makes sense that 2020 is the year that this is happening.
Fans can get excited because the new movie isn't going to ignore the original story. The new girls have a photo of Nancy, which is a way that both stories are tied together, and it's going to be fascinating to see how Nancy factors in.
3 Unnecessary: The Characters Had Such Tragic Backgrounds
It's unknown if the new characters in The Craft: Legacy have tragic backgrounds or have gone through the same kinds of struggles that the OG characters did. But it's likely that nothing can match what Nancy and her pals go through.
From Bonnie's back being covered in horrible scars that make her insecure to Nancy's abusive home situation, these stories are so heartbreaking and add a human element to the scary story.
2 Excited: It's Always Time For More Feminist Stories
Looking at The Craft through a feminist lens, it's awesome that there will be a new group of witches, and there's no reason not to embrace this new story.
It will always be a good idea to create more strong female characters who are leading a film and making things happen. Even fans of the original can't complain about this (and they will always have the 1996 flick to come back to, of course).
1 Unnecessary: It Doesn't Seem Like Any OG Cast Will Return
Nancy is one of the best 90's witches, and although her photo is a big part of The Craft: Legacy, it doesn't seem like any of the original characters will return.
That's a bit disappointing, as it can be cool when a reboot has an older character as a teacher, parent, or mentor. It's a nice nod for fans and can help any skeptics come around. But even if Nancy herself and her three witch friends don't come back, it will still be interesting to see what The Craft: Legacy is all about.
