Wisconsin has breached 5,000 daily cases in three of the past five days; the state had never reached the mark before then. Over the past seven days, the state has averaged 4,404 newly reported cases per day. To date, 225,370 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Wisconsin.
To contextualize how bad Wisconsin's coronavirus surge has been in the past month, it took until Sept. 20 for the state to surpass 100,000 total cases. The DHS reported 103,096 cases in October alone, along with 704 deaths.
The percentage of positive tests also remains high. According to the DHS, an average of 28.8% of all people tested over the past seven days had contracted COVID-19.
The DHS also reported 229 new hospitalizations on Saturday. There are currently 1,546 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, with 350 in intensive care. About one-third of all patients are on ventilators.
A total of 11,374 patients have required hospitalization so far, according to the DHS.
So far 175,096 people are recovering from COVID-19 and no longer need isolation, while 48,208 cases remain active in Wisconsin — more than 20% of the state's confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.
