Try pickle pop and over 170 other craft sodas at this Muskegon area bakery - MLive.com

Would you like a side of bacon with your doughnut? At Goober’s Bakery in Norton Shores, one of our finalists for Michigan’s Best Doughnut, you can get that - but you’ll have to drink it. In addition to delicious doughnuts, the popular bakery offers up oodles and oodles of craft sodas you can try, and some of the flavors are pretty crazy.

Owner Kevin Simons decided to start adding some fun sodas after he remodeled and expanded his bakery in December 2019. The addition created a “better flow to the place” he said, and with the new space, he had room to try a few different things.

What started out as a bit of an experiment quickly morphed into several walls lined with colorful bottles, and 175 different varieties of craft soda for sale.

Goober's Bakery

Just one part of the selection at Goobers in Muskegon. They offer over 175 different craft sodas to try.

We should point out that Goobers Bakery is a true bakery, first and foremost.

They fry up a mind-blowing 75 different kinds of doughnuts every day, and often sell out early, and then fry up multiple batches again, mid-day. While we didn’t try all of them, but we did try quite a few.

The 1/2 and 1/2 is a gem of a pastry, a fried cinnamon bun that gets coated with half peanut butter icing and half chocolate. Simons told us that his daughter was the taste tester on this, and she insisted on more and more peanut butter in the icing. Well done, we say. That peanut butter icing is almost tipping to the savory side, which is absolutely delicious.

Simons took over the bakery just about seven years ago, and while he hasn’t changed any recipes, he’s “improved them a bit” and the size of the doughnuts are bigger. The number-one seller here is the apple fritter, and coming in a close second is the classic custard long john. Third is the before mentioned 1/2 and 1/2.

In addition to awesome doughnuts, the bakery also makes a selection of breads, rolls, cookies, and other pastries. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention their famous “Devil Dog,” sugary concoction of chocolate cake, covered in chocolate fudge, and stuffed with a sweetened whipped cream. It’s delectable.

Goobers owner Kevin Simon, along with his manager Deb, bring out the doughnuts to try.

So back to these craft sodas. 175 different flavors means that there are traditional, and not-so-traditional ones to choose from. The number-one seller according to Simons is the old school Dr. Pepper in the glass bottle. “People love the nostalgia of this,” he said. Other old-school favorites are classic Faygo flavors like Rock N Rye, Dad’s Root Beer, and Orange Crush.

Where things really go off the rails are the weird and crazy flavors that are on hand at Goobers.

Rocket Fizz Green Apple Jalapeno. Judge Wapner Root Beer. Bacon Soda with Maple Syrup.

These seem a bit tame when you then come across pop like Dragon Drool, Pimple Pop, Dinosaur Dung, Worm Ooze, Dog Drool, Unicorn Yack, and Bug Barf.

It’s all in good fun, and fun is what it’s all about at Goobers.

They’ve gone through a lot at Goobers, over the last couple of months, and the last seven years. “We’ve had a lot of growth, and a lot of learning,” Simons said. “But if you do something you love, you never work a day in your life.”
