Charlotte FC Using Pandemic Stall to Craft Winning Team - Spectrum News

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Time is a luxury many do not have. That's not the case for the Charlotte FC, the expansion franchise heading into Major League Soccer in 2022.

They have a lot more time than they had originally planned.

Charlotte FC was to begin play in the 2021 season; however, the coronavirus pandemic's impact around the world made that a near impossibility. The team has said they would have been ready but the added time is allowing the franchise to be more meticulous in their approach.

Sporting Director Zoran Krneta already has two players under contract with Charlotte. Forward Sergio Ruiz and midfielder Riley McGree were the first to join the club, and they are currently on loan in Europe. Ruiz is playing with Las Palmas in Spain, while McGree is with Birmingham City in England.

Krneta was a guest on the Chevrolet Sports Night on Friday and says he's been happy with how Ruiz, the first signee in club history, is playing this season.

"He's doing really well, really progressing," Krneta said. "He's played 14 games, but got a slight injury, so he's missed the last game and probably will miss one more before the season stops for Christmas in Spain, but we are very happy with Sergio."

Krneta is eyeing the January transfer window to possibly make more signings, but the club is also in search of its first manager.

"We are getting there. It's going to take some time (to make the hire)," Krneta said.

Krneta indicated it would be another five or six months before the club announces their first field boss in franchise history.
