Massachusetts will see its first strong winter storm of the season this weekend, with the forecast continuing to evolve in hours before it arrives.

The National Weather Service issued an updated forecast Saturday morning for the storm system expected to produce gusty winds and heavy rain before changing to a period of heavy, wet snow Saturday afternoon into the evening.

Snowfall rates could reach one to two inches per hour leading to difficult travel and power outages.

Central Massachusetts is likely to be the hardest hit by Saturday’s storm. A foot of snow to up to 18 inches is expected in Worcester and communities surrounding the city, while eight inches to a foot of snow is expected from Fitchburg to Lawrence and Bedford.

In Boston, the forecast has increased with now four to six inches of snow expected. South of the city, six to eight inches are expected in Foxborough.

In the Pioneer Valley, expected snowfall has increased slightly with now three to four inches expected in Springfield and Amherst, while two to three inches are expected in Greenfield. The Hilltowns are expected to see four to six inches while further west in the Berkshires, one to two inches are forecast from Great Barrington to North Adams.

The Cape and Islands will see little-to-no snow accumulation on Saturday.

Snow is expected first in Western Massachusetts, with the northwest corner of the Berkshires likely to see the first flakes around 10 a.m. It will reach the Pioneer Valley and Central Massachusetts in the early afternoon, then Boston in the late afternoon.

While coastal communities will see little-to-no-snow, winds will be of the most concern. Wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour are possible on the Cape and Islands Saturday afternoon into the evening.

In Boston, wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected.

Further west, wind gusts up to 40 to 45 miles per hour are forecast to hit Fitchburg and Worcester.

Western Massachusetts will feel the lowest wind gusts of the day, with speeds up to 35 to 40 miles per hour expected.
