New craft-centric taproom Star Sailor HTX, opens in Heights despite coronavirus challenges - Houston Chronicle

Amid all the economic struggles surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, a new taproom and restaurant is serving guests in the Greater Heights Area.

Star Sailor HTX has been open since Dec. 5 but will host a grand opening event on Dec. 19.

In addition to providing craft beverages, which go beyond just beer, Star Sailor offers a kitchen space for Houston chefs and local products, such as Hoppy Heat hot sauce, coffee from The Constellation Coffee Company and candles from Bayou Burns.

Getting tested: Texas begins providing rapid COVID-19 tests to small businesses

Owner and operator Marin Slanina has been operating and working at small businesses across the country for many years and decided she wanted her own taproom.

She was the marketing and taproom manager at Urban South HTX, which opened this past February. But the taproom was shut down on March 15.

The native Houstonian — Marin grew up in The Woodlands — wants to create that same experience that her events have been known for but in the new post-pandemic environment.

“Our opening day at Urban South Brewery HTX, we had over 1,500 people in that 5,000-square foot taproom. That is not something that exists anymore. However, that vibe and that feeling that people still want to experience,” Slanina said.

“We’re doing everything that we can to capture in 2,000 square feet—there’s only actually about 1,500 square feet up front. We will maximize every inch of every space so that people can feel in their own safe bubble, be able to enjoy a good craft beer that’s locally made, learn about a new product that is locally made and have a access point that all of these vendors that might not have a storefront.”

Star Sailor is converting three parking places right in front of it into a patio and is building a patio on the side of the building for more outdoor events. It is adding a couple couches that will be spread out throughout the building. It is also looking to stream entertainment events.

Slanina has also acquired a delivery permit, so all of Star Sailors products can be delivered to somebody’s house.

“I try very hard not to say no,” said Slanina. “I work at finding every permit, every license, every insurance, every research team that I can find to ensure that we are doing it properly.

The local emphasis is important to Slanina, who has been in the craft beverage and brewery scene in Houston for seven years.

Beer run: Texas craft beer fans support local breweries at first-ever Houston Beer Run

“I’ve been here for a very long time. I’ve left and come back many times. Houston always brings me back,” she said. “I love everything Houston — the culture, the diversity, the beautiful people and the creativity of this city. I don’t think there’s many places where you can find a collaborative network of all of it under one roof,”

Even the name is a tribute to Houston, Space City. Star Sailor is the Greek translation for astronaut.

Slanina fully acknowledges the significant risk of opening her restaurant and taproom amid the pandemic, especially one in the hospitality industry, but she is excited about the opportunity to own and operate her own business doing what she knows best.

“Every decision that I make from now until forever, but really more importantly from now until January, February, March is crucial,” she said. “Especially with the exposure rates being higher every single day. Every move that we make is very important; every decision that we make has a dollar amount to it.”

Yet Slanina is concerned with more than just the businesses’ cash flow.

She wants to broaden people’s horizons beyond the popular national beer brands to local craft beers, ciders and meads.

She recognizes the importance of supporting local businesses to the well-being of the community.

And Slanina is confident in Star Sailor HTX and what it brings.

“It’s something new, something exciting. It’s not something that you haven’t seen before, but maybe you had to go to ten different places to make it all happen,” she said. “Now it’s a one-stop shop.”
