The title-hopeful Dallas Fuel have their team. Now what? - The Dallas Morning News

Yun “RUSH” Hee-won and Go “Aid” Jaeyoon never truly put away their work after hours when they were with the Paris Eternal in 2020.

It was the long nights, chatting with each other about how their team could possibly adapt to a new, complex Overwatch League meta that led them to a top-five finish.

Now with the Dallas Fuel, officially complete with eight players and three coaches, The Fuel have loftier expectations than being in the title conversation.

But what is next for the Fuel? The team still hasn’t practiced together yet, and the current patch in Overwatch will certainly not be what is played in OWL. Even the role of Overwatch 2, still without a release date, is an unknown factor for the 2021 season.

So how does a team get ready for the season in a game that will look and play differently?

The answer may be more late work days, because this coaching staff didn’t check out after normal hours last season.

“Instead we would talk to each other and communicate regarding how today’s scrim went and what kind of opinion we have to share,” said Fuel assistant coach Aid via interpreter. “Having these words go back and forth really helped determine what meta we wanted to solidify and that helped us come up with a fast solution.”

RUSH, the team’s new head coach, felt the coaching staff’s main focus for now should be identifying how it can adjust the Fuel to each new meta that may come in 2021. Dallas has talent across the board in every role, but even RUSH acknowledged there are some voids.

The Fuel only have two tank players in Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seouk and Choi “Hanbin” Han-been. Fearless was an all-star for a contending Shanghai Dragons team last season while Hanbin proved to be one of the better off-tanks OWL had to offer.

But they don’t cover every single meta perfectly. That may be OK, RUSH added.

“As long as the two tanks can be on the same page and have an understanding of what they are supposed to do and also synergize with the rest of the players,” RUSH said via interpreter. “I feel like that would be honestly ideal.”

Hero bans and enabling the Fuel talent will be important for the coaching staff. Aid used to think that was all he needed to do as a first-year coach last season.

When COVID-19 forced OWL to eliminate live events and the teams had to confine to their homes from the season, he learned different values that could be crucial for 2021.

“If I look back, everybody had a hard time in Paris after the pandemic,” Aid said. “But with the staff being a support system for the players by eating meals with them, playing games with them or even listening to them with any concerns, that was what was very helpful.”

It’s a tall order for the Fuel this season, even with a roster that’s excited their fan base. OWL powerhouses like the San Francisco Shock and Philadelphia Fusion have made power moves themselves in the offseason to defend the top of the standings.

But RUSH felt the Eternal core was just getting started last year. Now the Dallas Fuel, this group is confident it can take the leap.

But there’s still not much they can do now other than work on their game mechanics. So understanding past shortcoming could be the real offseason meta the Fuel try to get ahead of.

“The players that have been playing for a while will have to look for ways to improve from this year’s mistakes,” RUSH said. “For the rest of the players, they will have to figure out what they can do as of now and prove their skills based on that.”
