How does a sour smoothie beer sound? Or maybe even a sour heads flavored beer?
These are just a few of the unique flavors featured Saturday at the fourth annual Craft Beer Fest in Amsterdam.
“Just having people wander around and being outside, smiling,” Sam McCalry said. “The sun is shining, beer is pouring and we are happy.”
New York’s craft beer industry continues to grow each year, becoming a multimillion-dollar market.
McCalry, who’s worked with the city for a few years on the event, says it’s great to showcase what these brewers can do.
“These guys are really pushing the envelope and that’s really what sets them apart,” McCalry said. “Doing so many different styles. Adjuncts and different things. And there’s a whole world of beer that people don’t even know about.”
Some of the flavors were unexpected, but were a welcome surprise for many in attendance.
“I literally just tried a rhubarb beer,” Jessica Yap said. “Like who does that? That’s not a normal thing you put in a beer. It’s awesome to try a lot of different things.”
This year's festival meant a little more to brewers.
The pandemic took quite the toll on the industry, causing prices to skyrocket for manufacturing supplies.
But brewers like Rich Michaels say the exposure at the festival will go a long way.
“It’s very important to be out here showing people and telling people what we are doing,” Michaels said. “A couple of breweries here today opened during the pandemic. We opened about a year before the pandemic.”
Attendees showed up by the hundreds, with many coming out to support the local breweries they’ve come to know and love.
“We love that there so many amazing breweries that we can go to and the sour side always represents,” Yap said. “So we try all the different things and it’s important to shop local.”
