Scotia students craft ornaments for U.S. Capitol Christmas tree - Eureka Times-Standard

Ornaments created by students at Stanwood A. Murphy Elementary School in Scotia will be some of the decorations on the National Christmas tree and on some of the smaller trees that will be on display nearby in Washington, D.C.

The ornaments were created by students who participate in the after-school program in Scotia and were made with recycled materials designed to withstand the winter weather in Washington D.C.

Scotia after-school program coordinator Lisa Broadstock said, “Since the National Holiday tree was selected from the Six Rivers National Forest, the Humboldt County Office of Education sent out a request for ornaments to adorn the National Christmas tree(s). Because the use of recycled materials plays a big role in our region,” she added, “students used recycled items for their artistic vision in order to create their ornaments.”

Most of the ornaments depict Humboldt County scenes.

The after-school program in Scotia is held from the close of school until 6 p.m. each weekday. Amy Gossien, Scotia School District Superintendent and Stanwood A. Murphy Elementary School Principal said, “The students in the after-school program take part in many community service activities throughout the year and our program coordinator is always looking for additional ways to connect the students with their community.”

Gossien said the success of the after-school program stems from the personnel running the program. “Our coordinator Mrs. Lisa Broadstock and after-school staff provide a great environment for our students to take part in diverse academic and enrichment experiences and explore learning about topics relevant and of interest to the students.”
