Halfway to Holyoke St. Patrick’s Road Race to feature food, craft vendors - MassLive.com

HOLYOKE — The countdown to St. Patrick’s week begins with the 2021 Halfway to St. Patrick’s 5K Road Race on Saturday, Sept. 11, at Ashley Reservoir and the Holyoke Lodge of Elks.

Runners who sign up online before race day can receive a $5 discount on the $35 entry fee. Inperson registration opens at 10 a.m. on race day, followed by the Kid Fun Run at 12:15 p.m. and the 5K dash at 1 p.m.

The day will also feature a food and vendor fair, inflatable slide and obstacle course, coloring and crafts led by The Children’s Museum of Holyoke, and fun hairstyles by Carve Beauty Bar. In addition, the Saucy Mama and Crave Food Trucks will serve fans and runners throughout the day.

Vendors include Allen’s Farmhouse Finds, Azura Apparel, Caron’s Creations, Color Street. Crunchi, Farmasi, Irish Rover, Jeff Richard Photography, Paintings from the Heart, Pillows by Peggy, Pine Knoll designs, Pink Zebra, Tastefully Simple, Terra Apothecary, Tupperware and Wolly Bites.

Since the advent of COVID-19 in March 2020, the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade and Road Race Committees canceled all significant events, including all award banquets, the popular 10K race, and parade that attracts a few hundred thousand spectators.

The road race annually attracts around 7,000 runners who traverse a mostly hilly course through Holyoke’s neighborhoods. However, COVID-19 restrictions forced postponements in 2020 and 2021.

Unlike in 2020, the parade and road race committees did not wait until March to cancel this year’s major events.

At the time, Parade Committee President Marc Joyce fretted about the economic impact on local businesses, especially the loss of revenue for parade week favorites like Brennan’s Place and Francie’s Tavern, which set up large hospitality tents near Maple Street.

The Log Cabin and Delaney House host many of the parade committee’s premier events, such as the Grand Marshal’s Reception, John F. Kennedy Award Banquet, and Grand Colleen Coronation Ball.

The John F. Kennedy National Award Recipient typically presides over the road race’s shotgun start. All 2020 awardees and Grand Colleen and Court remain intact. Parade presidents only serve one year. However, Joyce will enter his third year at the helm.
