Lost, Found and Looking: Pre-owned pets, cookbook and Craft Fair - Courier-Gazette & Camden Herald

THOMASTON — From the desk of Chrys deLorimier, Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Development Director.

Ready or not, the holidays are almost upon us. I hope this season brings you moments of closeness with friends and family. We have all been through a lot lately, and fall, into winter, is a great time to rest, reconnect with each other and appreciate life’s blessings.

If there is room in your family for one more, perhaps Steel Magnolia could fill it. She is six years old and ready to bring her sweet personality to your turkey day or yuletide festivities. Opening your home to a pre-owned pet this season is one way to spread cheer in a meaningful way. Adopted animals give back so much more than they require. Come in to the shelter see who might be a good fit.

Recipes to the Rescue, the PMHS community cookbook, is out. A tasting event recently showed off the wide variety of recipes; each surprising and delicious. Knowing each staff, volunteer or community member submitted their absolute favorite recipes, this reference is sure to bring variety, and fun, to your kitchen adventures. If you would like your own copy — or one to gift — please stop into the shelter. It is a bargain at $20, as proceeds help the animals here stay warm and cozy this season.

In the market for a dog, but not sure where to start? The shelter has several in “finishing school,” brushing up manners or getting beautiful for adoption. The best way to find your new best friend is to fill out the application online at www.PopeHumane.org and let us know who you’re looking for. Then, come talk to the staff, who are excellent matchmakers.

Thinking about special people this season and wanting to give something unique and handmade? The 41st Festival of Lights Craft Show is coming Nov. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rockland Elks Club. It is just a $2 donation at the door. Handmade jewelry, soaps and much more, so you can give thoughtful and beautiful gifts this season. From all of us here at the shelter, we wish you a happy Thanksgiving.

Out shopping? Top needs: Catnip, kitty treats — they love Temptations and Greenies — floor cleaners, trash bags in 33- and 13-gallon sizes, and poultry flavored paté style cat food.
