MDHHS has launched "MI Kids Now," a statewide effort to improve behavioral health services for children and youth with Medicaid coverage and/or in the foster care system.

Behavioral health services are a vital part of comprehensive care for Michigan's children, youth and families. Early screenings, assessments and treatment services can have a significant positive lifetime impact on the behavioral and mental health of children and youth. Appropriate and timely access to services can also prevent unnecessary emergency department visits, hospitalizations, or entrance into the juvenile justice system.

MDHHS is deeply committed to providing high-quality behavioral and mental health services to all children and youth when they need them. Investing in these services now will help Michigan's youth and their families lay a foundation for a brighter future, including health, wellness, stability and success in school.

The KB vs MDHHS lawsuit highlighted the need to ensure access to intensive in-home and community-based services, to determine eligibility for those services in a standardized, consistent way, and to increase collaboration among the behavioral health, education, public health and child welfare systems. We will consistently engage families, providers, legislators and other stakeholders in this process by being transparent and inclusive during the implementation process.

Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS Director
