SPRINGFIELD (WEEK) -- It's been a week since recreational marijuana became legal in Illinois, and those looking to start a business in the industry can start applying for licenses.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture released the applications Tuesday for cannabis infuser, transporter and craft grower licenses, according to a release by Gov. JB Pritzker's administration.
Informational workshops will be held throughout the state by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the Illinois Department of Agriculture for those interested in applying.
“These craft grower, infuser and transporter licenses are vital to the success of Illinois’ emerging cannabis industry,” said Jeff Cox, Bureau Chief of Medicinal Plants at IDOA. “We will ensure each of these licenses is selected through a fair, unbiased and anonymous process.”
As part of the state's social equity program involved with marijuana legalization, those who qualify as social equity applicants will receive additional points on their application, as well as be eligible to receive technical assistance, grants, low-interest loans and fee reductions and waivers.
Application fees are $5,000. However, for those who meet the requirements for a social equity application will pay $2,500, according to the release.
If selected, license holders will have an annual renewal fee of $40,000 for craft growers, $10,000 for transporters and $5,000 for infusers.
Applications will be accepted starting February 14 and are due to the state by 5 p.m. March 16 and licenses will be awarded by July 1. Those interested can find applications here.
