It’s Oregon Craft Beer Month; Function PDX pop-up gets celebration started - OregonLive

Oregon Craft Beer Month — a celebration of craft beer that includes brewery tours, releases and other events — kicks off Friday with the Oregon Beer Showcase, a 10-day pop-up in Northwest Portland offering beers from all regions of the state.

The showcase, which is sponsored by the Oregon Brewers Guild and The Oregonian/OregonLive, will feature a rotating tap takeover at the Function PDX event space on Northwest 23rd Avenue. The pop-up, which runs from Friday, Jan. 31, through Sunday, Feb. 9, for the first five days will pour beers from Bend Brewing, Yachats Brewing, Solera Brewing, Block 15 Brewing and Ordnance Brewing. The second five days will feature Boneyard Beer, Coldfire Brewing, Pelican Brewing, Ferment Brewing and Allegory Brewing.

The brewers guild, which organizes Oregon Craft Beer Month, in the fall shifted the celebration from July to February to better align with craft-beer schedules and events.

“Summer is a busy time for Oregon breweries. If we wanted to ask guild members to take part in new events and activities, it made sense to slot the month into a different time frame,” said Tony Roberts, the guild’s co-executive director.

February was a natural fit because it was already ripe with calendar dates such as Zwickelmania, which will be the highlight event for Oregon Craft Beer Month.

Held over two Saturdays and named after the zwickel valve that allows brewers to sample beers from fermentation or conditioning tanks, Zwickelmania is an open house at more than 100 breweries across the state for tastings and behind-the-scenes tours. The annual event typically draws more than 30,000 people, the guild said.

Zwickelmania’s first Saturday, on Feb. 15, will feature Portland-area breweries. The next Saturday, Feb. 22, will see events at breweries in central Oregon, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast, southern Oregon and the Willamette Valley. The events run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both dates.

For the second year, Oregon Craft Beer Month will include a limited-run collaboration beer made by 30 Oregon breweries. Cans of State of Excitement IPA, a West Coast IPA, will be available for purchase at select breweries during Zwickelmania, with proceeds benefiting the brewers guild, which supports breweries.

The month features events big and small, including tap takeovers, beer festivals, panel discussions, among others. And this year, The Oregonian/OregonLive is jumping into the celebration and brewing its own collaboration beer, #FakeBrews IPA, made with Labrewatory in North Portland. A release party will be held toward the end of February – stay tuned for details.

In addition to Zwickelmania, the collaboration and the showcase, other more prominent events include:

  • KLCC Brewfest, Feb. 7-8 in Eugene
  • McMenamins Cedar Hills Pub IPA Fest, Feb. 8 in Beaverton
  • Fort George Brewery’s Festival of the Dark Arts, Feb. 15 in Astoria
  • Oregon Beer Awards at Revolution Hall, Feb. 18 in Southeast Portland
  • Cask Fest at Away Days Brewing, Feb. 22 in Southeast Portland
  • McMenamins 27th annual Hillsdale Brewfest, Feb. 22 in Southwest Portland
  • StormBreaker Brewing’s Brewstillery Festival, Feb. 29 in North Portland.

The showcase starting Friday will be held daily from 2 p.m. to closing at Function PDX, 919 N.W. 23rd Ave., Suite A. Packaged beers from more than 20 breweries, beer trivia and meet-the-brewer sessions will be offered in addition to the tap takeovers.
