Craft breweries bringing more people to small towns - KSNB Local 4

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The interest in craft beers has now reached outside of Lincoln and Omaha. Many smaller towns in Nebraska are seeing breweries and taprooms bringing people from around the state. With the growth in demand, it is a welcome sight to hop growers.

A Kearney Hop Growers and Brewers Conference highlighted how craft beers are becoming more trendy in Nebraska and it is drawing people to breweries in small towns. (KSNB)

Pilsners, stouts, IPA’s, lagers, and other craft beers are gaining attention in Nebraska as more breweries pop up all around the state. Greg Luttel opened his brewery in Albion about a year and a half ago. He said he gets a lot of support for his craft.

“I love all different styles of beer and doing that small batch has allowed me to do that kind of give everybody kind of a taste of what we can do,” Luttel, the Hwy 14 Brewing Owner said.

The grower and brewer conference brings the two businesses together to help network. There isn't enough hop growers in Nebraska to meet the local demand so many have to source ingredients from out of state. While the state has rich soils there are some challenges with growing the niche crop.

“Ideally western Nebraska is actually the best climate. It's drier, you don't have to deal with things like humidity, mildew, that kind of thing,” UNL Extension educator Katie Kreuser said.

There are about 50 breweries from Omaha to Scottsbluff and the smaller locations said they are finding more tourists are getting off the highways and interstates to check out what beers they have to offer.

“We're in Custer County and rarely do we see a Custer County vehicle in our parking lot on a Saturday it is counties from all over the state, states from all over the country that are in that parking lot that are there primarily because we're there,” Kinkaider Brewing Co-Owner Nate Bell said.

Growers and brewers hope they can continue to expand their passion for new and interesting beers. Another focus of the conference was how craft breweries can be more of an experience than just a place to have alcohol and the community that is built around that is where the popularity for the craft continues to grow.
