HURON — A gloomy Monday was brightened by colorful crayon art at the Huron Public Library.
Using old crayons, children colored a piece of paper with a variety of different colors and coated it with black paint. It created a scratch-off coloring sheet. They also took pieces of crayons and put them on wax paper. The crayons were melted with an iron to create a cool sun catcher to hang in a window.
Melissa Harrington, head of youth services at the library, said a lot of their programs come from looking at the supplies they have and being resourceful instead of wasteful.
“We ordered all these new crayons but we didn’t want to just throw out our old crayons specifically for this craft,” she said.
The Huron Public Library organizes craft programs along with many other events. It’s continuing the STEAM Team program, which has become popular. The activities involve science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
Harrington said they’re bringing back the stuffed animal sleepover in February. Patrons will be able to leave their stuffed animals overnight at the library. When they pick up their stuffed animal in the morning, they’ll take home a collage showing what fun events their toy had during the sleepover.
Even though its winter, Harrington said they are excited about this year’s summer reading program.
Harrington said the library is important to the city and it serves everyone.
“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from but the library is for everyone. We want to make sure we are a welcoming and safe place. And we get to have fun on the side,” she said. “(The library) is good for literacy and hosting programs you can’t get anywhere else and we offer them all free to the public. What better place to come than the library?”
