Autumn craft market canceled because of COVID-19 concerns - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Music Boosters has voted to cancel its Sycamore Autumn Craft & Treasure Market for 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and concern for public health.

The autumn craft fair is held in conjunction with the annual Sycamore Pumpkin Festival. Both the planning committee and the music boosters board recommended cancellation for 2020. The board of directors voted unanimously on June 25 to cancel the nearly half-century-old event.

Cara Jovanovich, Sycamore Music Boosters president, said the decision to cancel was difficult but correct.

“We’re heartbroken,” Jovanovich said. “Our craft and treasure market is a wonderful community shopping event. Over nearly half a century, our great vendors and the Sycamore Music Boosters have built one of the best craft shows in the region.”

Sales of goods and concessions at the Autumn Craft & Treasure Market benefit K-12 music students in Sycamore schools via the Sycamore Music Boosters.

Concern about public health risks because of the COVID-19 pandemic was the main reason for canceling the event this year, Jovanovich said. The craft fair takes place within the Sycamore High School field house.

“As an indoor event that draws several thousand people – mostly adults and senior citizens – over four days, the risk of COVID-19 transmission is just too high,” Jovanovich said.

Uncertainty about whether the state of Illinois will permit large gatherings, and whether Sycamore Community School District 427 will allow the Music Boosters to use the SHS field house as it grapples with obstacles associated with the upcoming school year contributed to the decision to cancel, Jovanovich said.

Planning committee and board members had investigated possible alternatives to the traditional annual fair. Options included creating a virtual fair, reducing the number of vendors, and restricting the number of fair attendees.

“Given our realities – a quickly approaching deadline, and being a volunteer organization with limited resources collaborating with small business owners who also have limited resources – there’s no real way we could mount a craft fair that wouldn’t turn out badly for everyone,” Jovanovich said.

However, she said, “We want everyone to know that we view this cancellation as a one-year-only anomaly. We intend to relaunch our craft and treasure market – better than ever – in 2021.” Meanwhile, she said, the Sycamore Music Boosters will develop alternative fundraising efforts.
